xmetman writes This newsgroup has turned very quiet during the last two weeks. I notice that Dawlish hasn't posted since the 28th of August which has a lot to do with it, but it does seem a less vibrant place without him, even if at times it does seem to be just endless bickering about global warming! It seems a long way from dead to me, especially if you only consider the on-topic and non-slanging match posts, whose numbers I suspect have hardly changed.. -- John Hall "Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger." The arguments in USW are like a love-fest compared to some of the vituperation you hear about. We argue about AGW. Despite the insults it's tame, schoolboy bickering. I'm just glad I'm not a prominent person of the female gender or LGBT using twitter and other social media sites. I am always suspicious of the word "vibrant". You see it in tourism adverts and all it really means is that the town square is full of ****-heads at 2 in the morning most weekends. Dawlish has never brought vibrancy in the true sense to this group - he's brought unbelievable rudeness and raised the temperature as a consequence.. Heat but no light. It's as if we've been watching a football match in which one player goes around fouling everyone in sight but he's now off the field for one reason or another. The game seems to have lost something but it takes a little time to adjust to watching a game of football rather than a fight. It doesn't help that the game is a little dull, i.e. there's not much interesting weather just now. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |

As regards the weather, I agree, for the UK at any rate. But this week alone worldwide there has been severe flooding in Japan, Sicily and Bangladesh, Dust storms in the Middle East, Tropical Storm Henri near Bermuda, South African drought, continuing El Niño, tornado on lake Zurich to mention but a few, and all we have in this newsgroup is a report that Rupert Murdoch has bought the National Geographic. And yes I know this newsgroup is about UK weather, but you thought someone might have mentioned the phenomenal rain in Japan from typhoon Etau, after seeing a whole house float down a river on the news. My excuse is that I'm still labouring for a builder on a patio and garden pond. Sod's law meant that the recent dry spell has come to an end just as I get one coat of pond paint on! Bruce. |

It's a shame but one never gets much of a response to a posting about extreme weather abroad. Occasionally I put something up about the week-long fogs they get in Jakutsk with temperature bottoming out at -52°C which is extraordinarily cold even with no wind, but there's little response. The rain in Japan has been mentioned in the paper and I saw a figure of 60 cm. No silly little millimetres for them. Just because it's been downgraded from a hurricane doesn't mean you aren't going to get very wet. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |

But I can see what you mean John about not posting if you can't add anything of worth to the discussion. Bruce. |

To be fair, the ng has returned to normality. Going back over 20 years ago, there were many occasions when there were single figure posts, sometimes for days.
There have also been a number of colourful characters over the years who have helped to swell the traffic, but most have moved on. |

Franklin P Jones Yes, you have a point, and I have to admit I tend to do the same myself. No-one should feel discouraged from posting about interesting weather abroad even if it is greeted with merely a nod, so to speak. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |

There have also been a number of colourful characters over the years who have helped to swell the traffic, but most have moved on. It's also a quiet time of year. It's noticeable how traffic peaks in winter (especially when there's snow or the prospect of snow) and, to a lesser extent, when the UK is unusually hot and/or thundery in summer -- John Hall "Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger."
