![]() The News (Portsmouth): "An early weather warning has been issued across the UK as experts forecast months of freezing conditions in what is expected to be the worst winter in half-a-century." Doesn't say who the "experts" are. http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/wea...area-1-7007924 |

As you say the source is never mentioned although the on-line Daily Telegraph* got as far as quoting 'agency' yesterday. Despite the nonsense these stories tend to stick on the websites presumably because they attract the punters. * I only look at it because it has nice pictures - honest -- George in Swanston, Edinburgh, 580'asl www.swanstonweather.co.uk www.eppingweather.co.uk www.winter1947.co.uk |

A 10p says it's Jonathan Powell. --------------------------------------------------------------- Leon Brown, of The Weather Channel UK, said: ‘The main theme for this week is drier weather but also turning quite a bit colder.’ He said overnight temperatures will touch freezing in parts of the country with widespread frosts likely under clear skies. ‘This is most likely over Scotland on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, but later in the week temperatures close to freezing in the south too by Friday morning.’ Which is not unreasonable. It is pathetic journalists as well as the pathetic Exacta Weather etc. that cause the problems. |

Coldest, snowiest winter for 50 years, or 100 years; or "as bad as 1962/63." He's obsessed with the idea of low solar output (Maunder Minimum style) leading to a rapid "little ice age" onset. It didn't work out last year so he's now invented a twelve month "lag". Or, given that it didn't work out the year before either, shouldn't that be a 24 month lag? Stephen. |

It doesn't seem to have occurred to either the Telegraph or the avian experts that this might be a result of the unusually early cold snap across northern Europe in recent days rather than having any forecasting value for future conditions. -- John Hall "Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger."
