Default West Cornwall 1st/2nd Jan. Big Sea impacts

The last couple of days have seen some stormy conditions on the tip of Cornwall.

Yesterday (1st) saw SE gales on exposed coasts, and a big sea developing and coming straight into Mount's Bay, SE is the worst direction. The sandbags put in an appearance along the prom, which was awash. Also the sea was big enough to throw large pebbles over, as well as large piles of seaweed.

Down in Mousehole a couple of cars were left on the pier, and totally written off. It's hard to feel sorry when the people were warned, but they don't appreciate the damage that can be done by water. I was in Mousehole today, and I understand one car was a company car driven by a chap who was only starting work with the company tomorrow! After the 1st high tide it filled up with water, and attempts to remove it near low water failed as the waterlogged electrics made it impossible to release the electronic handbreak. The next high tide a few boulders finished it off.

Today it was the turn of the WNW, not as strong as I'd expected, but still gusting 50kt on the north coast. (Recent gust of 52kt at St Ives). Significant wave height currently around 20' at Sevenstones.

Good pics, Graham. If we get much more rain here I think we might see some
sail-boarding on the fields :-) No surf, though!

That reminds me of the visitors that leave their cars parked along the
normally busy Esplanade in Sidmouth. The fact that the locals have
removed their own cars and therefore, there are loads of parking spaces
should ring a bell with the non-locals. But alas they nearly always end
up with a pebble-dashed car as the sea kicks up the pebbles and throws
them at force onto the Esplanade.

Damn dangerous to walk along there too during a southerly gale,
especially without a hard hat.

Crikey - that's where my daughter is staying. I'm confident her partner
is more sensible than that though and I did warn her to be careful!

I did wonder if that was her surfing just the other side of the wall? (Just joking - I think!)

We seem to get out biggest swells in years ending in a 4. 2014 is well known, here is 2004 http://www.turnstone-cottage.co.uk/PzStorm.PDF The 3rd pic shows waves breaking over Mousehole pier, the one the cars were damaged on. When I wrote that piece, I didn't expect it to be so bad again just 10 years on.

Nothing like that this time! Just a normal winter event.

She probably enjoyed it, much more fun than just drizzle.
