Default Cold and very wet 24 hours in Brussels: much snow and rain

Brussels on Friday 15th January 2016

Snow that began late on Thursday evening continued into the early hours of Friday, but turned to sleet and rain during the night: 16 mm rainfall at Uccle in the 12 hours to 06.00 UTC.

General cover of 3 to 4 cm of wet snow on roofs and vegetation this morning, but less on roads and pathways.

Light rain started again soon after dawn, changing to snow and intensifying around 10.15 local time. Continuous and sometimes quite heavy snow until about 12.00, but it then became lighter and changed back to sleet and rain. More or less dry but overcast from mid-afternoon, with another rain shower around dusk. Still a couple of cm of wet snow on the ground.

Temperature barely above freezing in the snow in the first part of the night and mid-morning; 2 to 3°C otherwise.

Moderate WNW wind veered NW during the morning and decreased during the afternoon; light NNW to N wind this evening.

Brussels Uccle 3.1°C - overnight minimum 0.1°C - and 36 mm rainfall
Brussels Airport 3.4°C - overnight minimum -0.1°C - and 40 mm

Yes :-) Actually, I was quite surprised that the rainfall totals in Brussels were so high.

Uccle reported 14 mm in the 6 hours up to midday on Friday, and a further 6 mm in the afternoon http://tinyurl.com/jmyu5lj .

Though wet snow fell steadily and fairly heavily for a couple of hours on Friday morning, starting around 10.15 local time, I'm surprised that (together with the rain/sleet before and after) it amounted to so much.

Much more snow fell and accumulated in Wallonia, the southern hilly part of Belgium. Serious traffic disruption on Friday the HGVs stuck on hills and jack-knifing on motorways; power cuts in the Liège area through trees blown on to overhead cables ...

In Flanders, there was heavy rain rather than snow: local flooding in several places when watercourses overflowed.

On Friday evening, a section of the coast road between Ostend and Middelkerke was blocked by "sand drifts": so much sand was being blown from the beach by the strong NW wind that it had to be closed to traffic.
