Default [WR] S.Essex. Clear skies - surprisingly mild

I don't really know what is going on these days but in a so called cold
snap in January following a cloudless day and a crystal clear evening
the temperature is stuck at +2.2C at 10.20 pm. I was expecting much
lower temperatures at this stage.

Similar here but the temperature is now (0050) falling slowly and is +0..4°C with a brilliant starry sky and the wind decreased to F2. The grass, in the darkness, felt slightly crunchy and I think there'll be an air frost though not much of one. Last night the temp was a steady 0°C (min 0.0°C). The air is dry enough - it's the wind and maybe heat from the ground.

I keep saying this and no one takes any notice - the 0-10cm soil charts remain stubbornly high, up to 10C

Yes but my soil has been high too (4.2C at 30cm depth last evening) and yet
the snow settled no problem and is now frozen solid (what's left of it).
Air temperature has been above freezing all night but that is down to wind
and is quite common up here. Slightly milder air came south last night and
that combined with some mixing kept air temperatures up a bit. Where the
wind dropped right out there has been an air frost. Surface fluxes are
important of course, but there were other factors at play too.

Scott did go sub-zero in his frost hollow in the end but just down to
zero here. Have another try tonight, although there could be more cloud
and an outside chance of a bit of light snow I suppose.

Got close to the 1st winter air frost in Penzance, with clear skies & a light offshore wind minimum was 0.3C. Despite this, and it being only 1.2C @ 09:00, no sign of a ground frost, just a hint of frost on cars.

On the windward N coast it's been between 7C & 9C throughout the last 24 hours.

Now (noon) 9.4C in Penzance, already 1C up on yesterday, the which was the lowest max of winter so far. Milder feel to the air today. Also fairly sunny, thin patchy Sc drifting fown from the NW.

Went sub-zero here last night though at around midnight the temperature
rose from 0.1C to 2.4 for an hour before dropping back again.

A sharp little frost in the end with -2.1C.

Soil temperatures have been on a slow decline after the grand 'winter'
highs of 13.0C @ 30 cm and 13.7C @ 100 cm on the 21st December. Current
30 cm soil temperature is 7.3C and current 100 cm soil temperature is 11.1C.

On this date last year the soil temperatures were 8.7C @ 30 cm and 10.8C
@ 100 cm.
