Gust front has just passed over here with thunder, lightning, rain
intensity 72mm/h for a few minutes and fence-threatening gusts! In the 2 years of running my VP2 (anemometer at 3m almost surrounded by houses) the previous high gust was 34 mph, this one just hit 39mph. Considering this is the night *before* the storm, interesting! -- Dave Fareham (W). |

Dave - this looked fairly nasty on the radar. Suspect there are some big gusts being brought down in this if it's gone convective.

First stroke at 2347 followed by a very long and loud muffled roar, and another one at about 0003. Rain hurling itself at the window but all fairly brief. It almost took out my garden fence even though I'd strengthened the weak points in anticipation, earlier in the day. It's just about hanging in there so far today! I will be surprised if I see a gust like that here again for some considerable time including today (highest so far have been 27 to 29 mph) although I now have a new 2 year highest 10 minute mean of 12 mph (don't laugh!) as of 12:30pm. Last night at the time of that 39 mph gust, my highest mean speed was a mere 11 mph, quite a difference. -- Dave Fareham (W). http://www.wunderground.com/personal...ID=IENGLAND600 |

On examining my thermograph trace this morning I found a discontinuity in the trace and I thought momentarily that the clock had stopped but on looking a bit more closely I found this was not the case. The trace ends just before midnight at about 9.5°C and reappears at the same instant reading 5°C with no connecting line. This must have been during the thunderstorm in which there were some violent gusts. The screen was probably rocking and took the pen away from the chart for a short time. Last night at the time of that 39 mph gust, my highest mean speed was a mere 11 mph, quite a difference. So I now have a new '2 year' highest gust figure last night at 23:06 in a squall as the cold front went over - 39 mph on the VP2; - and a second '2 year' highest 10 minute mean of 13 mph at 13:51 this afternoon. Highest gust was 33 mph this afternoon so last night's was stronger. Garden fence is at a weird angle now but just about stayed upright in spite of broken posts, starting to ease off now. Anemometer at 3m, housing estate back garden. -- Dave Fareham (W) |
