Ah, yes, the good old Christian traditions. The Crusades. The
Spanish Inquisition. The persecution of the Cathars. Bloody
Mary. Burning heretics at the stake. The English Civil War. The
Covenanting wars. Sectarian violence in Ireland and elsewhere.
Warring football supporters. Bizarre and extreme sects. Forcible
'conversion' of heathens leading to wholesale destruction of
traditions and customs in large swathes of Africa, America,
Australia and Asia. Infinite variations on the theme of
suppression or oppression of one flavour of Christianity by
adherents of a different flavour. Killjoy puritans.
Discrimination against people on religious grounds. All worthy,
historic traditional Christian customs.

And just by the way, if you are to be taken seriously as an
upholder of tradition and customs, you need to take some lessons
on the traditional, customary and correct placing of the
apostrophe in good old UK English.

Not such a fine day here today. Bit of traditional and customary
cloud cover but at least it's fair and the wind is light.

Anne

It's great to see the resident bigot being so successfully verbally trashed. Well done Asha and Anne. Absolutely brilliant put downs, and so true.

The Cockney 'culture' (excessive drinking, wife beating, washing the
doorstep with jellied eels) died of natural causes long ago, as did
workhouses and other memorable traditions. The Eastenders soap will
realise this in a hundred years.

The loss of christian traditions is to be applauded given that the
united queendom has returned to being a secular country at long last if
only in an effort to stop the good christian holy men molesting all the
children.

The borough of Newham lies just five miles east of the City of London,
banking capital of the world, but locals say it now looks less like a
British city, more like Baghdad.

The locals of Newham really do need to visit Baghdad to get their eyes
opened. There is not even a vague similarity between the two places or
their respective populations.

What a load of tripe.

In my lifetime and all of ours life has changed beyond recognition, just several generations ago life was so much harder. My father was born1921 and lived at the Elephant & Castle in a street St Gabriel that was bombed out during the war. His mother died when he was eleven in Lambeth Hospital aged 33 , she'd only been dead a week when his dad moved in another woman with her own kids and kicked him, his sister and two brothers out all day only to return home for bread and jam. They all shared one bed. When I found his address on the electoral record it seems that four couples lived in that house in 1928 as was common and no doubt all those couples had kids. But in 80 years our living standards have changed beyond all recognition but domestic violence is still an issue however it tends to be not the working class as much but the sub non working class that has developed under the liber decades of being advantaged by being pregnant, taking drugs and so forth. All those things will put you immediately at the head of the queue where housing is concerned and benefits is concerned.

When we get to Dame Silly Davies the 'chief Medical Officer' who says adults who knowingly take drugs despite all the evidence as to the dangers are called patients' now that is a stupid liberal lefty view of drug criminality which you may believe in yet for all the improvements in wealth and health domestic violence still exist within the indigenous as well as the immigrant population and even more so there when it comes to levels and sheer numbers.

So despite all these massive improvements it still goes on yet you talk in such a disparaging way about the indigenous working class Londoners who up until the fifties had a very hard life indeed which really was no different to the rest of the lower classes around the country but probably far better than those in the relative poorer parts of the world.

Also as usual people of a left persuasion attack Christianity which is a far more passive religion than the new kid on the block Islam will ever be , so why not attack that. It always gets me as well about the sex attacks on children within the catholic church especially as men would bring up boys and the bulk of all sexual abuse in the Church was by men -the sort that hang around Beulah Heights.

You say the demise of Christian religion is to be applauded but as I've said as an atheist the teaching of the bible seem far gentler and noble than those of Allah and the latter is precisely what will be replacing Christianity- is that what you prefer female genital mutilation, public beatings gays being thrown of Beulah Heights rather than frequenting them, do you find that preferable Gianna.

I'm not sure what you stance on the Scottish referendum was but if it was for than that makes you a hypocrite as you then promote the identity of Scottish people (not that England ever tried to stifle it as not many English choose to live in Scotland bar the Islands).

It seems to me you feel London should be ethnically cleansed of Christians and white cockneys and replaced by Islam honour killing and a far better class of people who just happened to have moved in. Maybe that would be good for Glasgow as well as alcohol abuse and wife beatings exist at levels far higher than those seen among the Cockneys . I guess they're just keeping old traditions going north of the border

I would have thought, from my many posts on USW, that I love living where I do.

Before someone suggests that's because I live well away from ethnic minorities I should point out that apart from living at various addresses in London for 7 years, back in dear old Cornwall:-

My immediate neighbour is half Bangladeshi, next to him are 2 Germans who live here around 6 months. Immediately opposite are 4 flats, 2 of which are occupied by Poles, who have a boat called King Bob (after Bob Marley) which I allow them to park in the road to left, and my daughter is taken out by a carer who is afro caribbean. Also we are invaded by all cultures (loads of Chinese these days) in the summer, and the bars seemed large manned by South Africans. I rather enjoy a mix of different types of people.

All cultures have downsides, religious fanatics are a Bad Thing whatever the religion. I think Anne Bs put down pointed that out brilliantly.

Fortunately, most people aren't bitter & bigoted.
