I mostly enjoy autumn, winter and spring here. Adequate clothing means it's always OK to go out. It never gets too cold for me and I can 'enjoy' the weather, whatever it is. In summer, when the temp gets above 18C I begin to feel uncomfortable and above 21C it's decidedly too hot. There's nothing I can do to cool down and, for me, there's nothing about it to 'enjoy'. We're all different. Some of us like it hot and some don't. Some of us like it cold and some don't. No harm in expressing our opinions about it. I've lived in many very varied climates all over the world but, for me, the climate of the British Isles away from the Midlands and south of England is as pleasant as anywhere that I have been to. I know that the majority of people see it rather differently but it would be bit boring if we were all the same :-) There is an old saying (Noewegian?) that there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing..... -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl Snow videos: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3QvmL4UWBmHFMKWiwYm_gg |

In message , "Keith (Southend)"
writes I do get fed up with people who keep saying it's to hot, enjoy it, our autumn, winter and spring can be dire as well in other ways. We might have to put up with it, but how can we be made to "enjoy" it if we don't? Do you want us to be brainwashed? I shall try to remember your post so that, should you ever complain about any sort of weather in the future, I can tell you to enjoy it. ![]() -- John Hall "Banking was conceived in iniquity and born in sin" attributed to Sir Josiah Stamp, a former director of the Bank of England |

This is one of the oddest comments I've seen on here for a long time. How on earth is it considered 'disrespectful' to not like somebody else's climate?? We all hve our preferences as to what kind of weather/climate we like. No doubt if a Portuguese person came here they may well find our summer climate 'vile.' In fact this happened a few years ago at work during the dreadful summer of 2012 when we had a guy from Portugal over for a year. As he stared sadly out of the window to grey lowering clouds and yet more rain, I felt moved to apologise for the climate in my country. I remember saying, this is bad, even for us! Maybe I was being too subtle/sarcastic but I was annoyed at Will's comments because this is a science newsgroup and just stating 'vile' which is a strong word and not following it up with a discussion on exactly why it was so hot, so as to inform the likes of myself (not a meteorologist) didn't seem a very constructive post - so why post it at all. The In-laws have been visiting us around Xmas for the last few years and the weather here is usually fairly similar to Lisbon at that time of year bar a couple of degrees cooler and a little less wet. The last time they came in the summer was 2012, though to be honest it was during the second half of July when the weather had improved somewhat but it was still a bit unsettled and cool at times. We're going to try and get them here for next summer - so fingers crossed. A summer like this one would be good. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalleyweather.me.uk |

This may well be a scientific group but it has always been OK for people to complain about the weather they dislike, even if that wasn't followed up with a detailed scientific discussion!
