Disappointing in the end. After a promising start with lawns rapidly becoming white and temp falling to 0.7, it petered out. Temp now up to 1.3 and a general thaw. Also what happened to the near gale NW?

Snowing hard on the Belgian coast now at 23.00 local time, and also in Bruges just inland.

That beach webcam with the snow streaming past the camera is remarkable. It looks like a meteor storm !

Gather them here. Hoping for a few flakes this evening in showers. Might drive up to Haldon and see a possible change to snow late afternoon as this system passes and we get into the cold air behind the cold front. Quite a lot here - 5 to 6 cm by the time it stopped at 18Z having started lightly at about 16Z It was remarkable how much light there was, easily enough to register on my digital camera. One second at f/3.3, ISO 400. I took a shot at 6 pm and of course it came out too bright and will have to be Photoshopped. The source of the light can only have been street lights, carefully designed to shine downwards, the light from which bounced off the lying snow and further bounced off the falling snow and the cloudbase, which must have been nearly on the deck. It's much darker now despite brilliant full moon. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, NE Surrey, 557 ft, 169 m |

Similar here, though there's a full cover of perhaps a couple of cm on the grass, and partial cover on other surfaces. Also what happened to the near gale NW? I heard the sound of one or two strong gusts but that was all. About 2 cm of snow left on the grass this morning, and a fair amount of frozen slush on pavements and untreated, lightly used roads. This was the first morning with snow lying here since at least the winter of 2014-5, when I can't remember if there was any or not. There was also none lying in 2013-4, which of course was the winter of floods and gales. Within the last half hour it's started snowing again, though it's very slight. Judging by the rainfall radar, the heavy stuff is likely to pass by to our east. -- John Hall "One can certainly imagine the myriad of uses for a hand-held iguana maker" Hobbes (the tiger, not the philosopher!) |
