Reservoir levels at historic lows (for the time of year, in the SW) https://www.southwes****er.co.uk/reservoirlevels Click on the graphs for more detail. It's turning into a very interesting winter in Cornwall. I'll have to do a combined Dec/Jan report. Not just lack of rain & an almost unheard of complete lack of gales (so far), but exceptionally high average barometric pressure etc. Graham Penzance Graham Penzance |

From that site's data, it seems as if the wetter than average first six months of 2016 in the Surrey area have been enough to compensate for the drier than average last six months. -- John Hall "One can certainly imagine the myriad of uses for a hand-held iguana maker" Hobbes (the tiger, not the philosopher!) |

Every month since last Feb. has been below, some well below, average in terms of rainfall. Will -- |

A pity the wetter and drier time periods aren't inverted*, so we get the nice sunny settled weather when it is most useful, and it would bring pleasant warmth. *like 1995. |

Near normal. See http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/...aries/anomacts choose sunshine, 1981-2010 anomaly, 2016 and the month. Very lumpy sea this morning https://www.minack.com/a-living-theatre/webcams/ after a big clean swell (10' sigficant wave height) yesterday. Graham Penzance |

Graham Penzance ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have had 88.2 mm so far this winter here in Wembury. I'm sure Feb is about to be wet with a regime change of the northern hemisphere circulation. 100 mm coming up IMHO. Here are ranked the driest (mm) recent winters (DJF) 1. 1975-76 106 2. 1991-92 142 3. 2004-05 163 4. 2005-06 193 5. 2011-12 202 The dry winter of 75-76 of course posed problems as there was no replenishment until the end of August. Recent dry winters down here have not caused problems since they built the large reservoir at Roadford in the 80s. Also, with so many people on meters there is less waste. Len Wembury SW Devon --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The dry winter of 75-76 posed an abnormally large problem as it fell between two warm dry summers (the latter being in the exceptional category). Summer 1995 caused water shortage problems, in Yorkshire mainly, I don't know how bad the drought was in the SE, but the overall drought wasn't as bad as it could have been, as winter 94-95 was one of the wettest of the century at the time. |
