You and Nick might be geographically pretty close but a world away in terms of climate. A very poor August for him might be average for you. Exactly Col. We had friends staying for the last few days and we headed for the beach at the weekend. It was OK when the sun shone but it felt rather chilly in the wind. And when that sun went in, it was get the fleeces out! It comes to something that one of the worst spells of weather of the entire year so far, occurs in August. I heard the sun may even shine this afternoon - a miracle (if it does). Currently 14.3C at 10:45 - it has got be a joke (hasn't it?) -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalleyweather.me.uk It's certainly been very poor by any standards. Monday felt fine, the best day of late, because there was virtually no wind, it was dry with spells of sunshine. The temperature still failed to hit 20C. Overall the temperature has been way below normal. Mean max here now 19.1C, with a absolute maximum of 20.3C - below the normal MEAN max. Bit more sun than you, 45 hours up at Bosullow from 1st - 8th. Looks set to be a notably poor summer month, unless things change dramatically. Graham Penzance This http://www.met.reading.ac.uk/~brugge/anomt.jpg & this http://www.met.reading.ac.uk/~brugge/sums.jpg demonstrate what a poor summer month it's been so far (relative to the norm) particularly in the south. Little sign of a change in the gneral unsettled pattern. Graham |

Little sign of a change in the gneral unsettled pattern. Autumn must have begun, as I found the first spider in the bathtub this morning. That's definitely a seasonal thing. I suppose that when the weather gets too chilly they crawl in from outside via the overflow pipe. Here in Surrey, August has certainly been very poor so far, but June was good (if dry, warm and sunny equates to "good"), as was July prior to the last week or so of the month. -- John Hall "Three o'clock is always too late or too early for anything you want to do."
