Spells of slight drizzle till mid-morning then dry until slight rain started a few minutes ago. Max temp 12.9°. We're almost one-third of the way through the month and the sunshine total up to today is a rather measly 13.7 hours. That's only 22% of the average for the whole month so we could be on for another very dull month relative to average. With September this year producing only 75% of the average sunshine for the month, the first half of autumn is showing a substantial sunshine deficit. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. https://peakdistrictweather.org Twitter: @TideswellWeathr |

The norm is approx 110 hours, so 23% of normal. Bossullow has also suffered, being on the moors, of catching all the misty low cloud in what has been very humid air of late. It's often, as today, been bright, but not bright enough to register as sunshine. There has been some (quite warm) sunshine today down in Penzance. Out of the mist the visibility has been VG/E. This morning mist at cliff top level, drop down 50', clear as bell. So far this year only April has been sunnier than the norm. Graham Penzance |

Another really low sunshine figure. 40 hours so far in Copley. Is your recorder well exposed or quite sheltered? Difficult to compare sunshine as some have their electronic recorders on the top of tall masts to catch every bit of sun. My Campbell Stokes is, obviously, at a more realistic height of four feet above the ground. Ken Copley Teesdale |

I've just checked and only January and April were sunnier than normal but most months were around average or just slightly below. March and September were the really 'stand-out' dull ones. Monthly sunshine (1st-9th) now at 48 hours and the annual total is now at 1468 hours, which is below the average for this date. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalleyweather.me.uk |

My Campbell Stokes is, obviously, at a more realistic height of four feet above the ground. Ken Copley Teesdale The recorder is pretty well exposed. It's at about 8 ft above ground, totally open from N through E, SE and S to WSW. The only limitation is that, due to the rising ground to the W and NW, we lose the last 45 minutes or so of sunshine towards sunset except in the winter months. That's if it's sunny, of course, which it isn't very often in late afternoon. Overall, I think my sunshine figures are a very good representation of the sunshine that we get here. I have checked the recorder and it does record 60 minutes sunshine during an hour with unbroken sun so I have no doubt about its reliability. As long as there are shadows it does respond. This is not a sunworshiper's paradise! The COL station at Middleton, about 25 km SE of here, has an annual average of 1151 hours which is 20% higher than my average. Buxton, about 10 km WSW of here, had an annual average of 1133 hours during the period 1931-1960. That's 18% above my average. So, perhaps our loss of sunshine in the late afternoons due to the lie of the land is a bit more significant than I thought or perhaps this is just a particularly un-sunny place. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. https://peakdistrictweather.org Twitter: @TideswellWeathr |

My Campbell Stokes is, obviously, at a more realistic height of four feet above the ground. Ken, my Instromet sunshine recorder is on a pole attached to the side of the house at 9 metres (1 metre below the anemometer). If my sunshine recorder was at 4 feet, I wouldn't record any sunshine until 10am at the earliest and nothing after 7pm (house in the way)! It is at that height to clear the trees at the bottom of the garden but it doesn't clear the hills! The very best I can get is that the recorder turns on about 30 minutes before sunrise in one of the dips between the hills (but that is very rare). Mostly it is 40 to 50 minutes after sunrise before the recorder will turn on. Sunset isn't so bad as the hills to the west are further away and not so high, therefore under clear conditions the recorder turns off about 20 minutes before sunset. Under extremely clear conditions I can record 93% of the total possible in the summer (less in the winter). I have recorded 95% but that is very, very rare. Therefore I suspect my sunshine figures are a little below the actual, but not by a huge amount. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalleyweather.me.uk |
