uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

Anyone know the model the BBC use for cloud cover? As ever 'upgrades' make
sites heavier and more cumbersome to use but the cloud cover forecast seems extremely accurate. Is the output available anywhere else on a public site? |

Hello David, if you are referring to the BBC weather website (you mention 'sites'), the answer is that my MeteoGroup colleagues decide on what they think will be the most accurate NWP models to use through the day for both the website, the weather app and of course the broadcast forecasts on BBC. MeteoGroup forecasters at the BBC weather centre then edit the weather elements -such as cloud cover- to reconcile any differences between models and to fit our 'weather story'. Of course, sometimes it is relatively easy to delineate the cloud cover accurately and very challenging indeed at other times! We've been working at road weather forecasting for over 20 years, an activity that succeeds or fails according to the accuracy of cloud forecasting.. I suppose the same could be said for all the site-specific forecasts that the public use so much today.
I hope that's what you were referring to. Regards. Julian Mayes. Molesey, Surrey. and MeteoGroup. |

Interesting that you use various NWP models for this. The problem I have with BBC detailed map page is that it is slow to load and settings can't be saved https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/0/maps But then I have an oldish PC - it may be much better on a smartphone or tablet. If the output were fed into a simple interface like this it would not be as pretty but far easier to access. http://modeles.meteociel.fr/modeles/...35-0.png?10-12 David |
