Max temp here 33.8°C, much hotter than yesterday (29.9°) and rather surprising. Some modest Cu around the middle of the day but now (1635Z) cloudless. The wind has picked up to a southerly force 3. Barometer falling nicely.

The near continent (Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris) has been very warm and there has been a SE'ly breeze, now southerly. It is not humid, whatever they try to tell us. DP's have been 12-13 typically. I'm wondering what Friday will bring. I have a feeling it will be slightly less hot due to high or medium cloud. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |

Yes, if you look at a sequence of 1000-850 hPa thickness charts you can see it in action, plus a bit of in situ warming too. We're missing out further west as the air here is cooler. There has been a bit of a diurnal cycle over the past couple of days, where there's warm advection in the morning, then a veering low-level flow in the afternoon owing to strong heating over England leading to low-level cold advection and comfortable nighttime temperatures. Looks like the large-scale dynamics will give us plenty of cold advection in the next couple of days, and some welcome rain too.
