uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

I want to be able to record outdoor temperature on my PC (and be able to
stick the temp on my website etc.) but I don't want to have to buy a full weather station for £hundreds. I also have no way of mounting anything as I'm in University accommodation, so have to make do with dangling something out of my window (which conveniently enough is nearly always in shade). Something that could connect to the serial port would be ideal. Does anyone have any ideas about what I could do? I could knock something up myself as I have access to a soldering iron and whatnot, but a premade option would be best. I hope to be able to get something better when I move into my own house eventually! Thanks, Jonathan Canterbury |

Interesting idea!
Id be interested in any replies to this. I have broadband (always connected) with an Apache webserver running on my PC. It sounds a nice idea to put a temperature-reading of my back-garden on the web. Brendan |

Well depends whether you want free or low-cost. For a couple of the latter look at: http://www.drdaq.co.uk and http://www.techsupplies.co.uk/ (and search for 'weather station') I've not seen or used either, so this certainly isn't a recommendation, just information. I suspect that the former in particular is just 'school-grade'. The 1-wire products have a better pedigree. You'd still need to do a little development with the software I guess, but at least you shoudl be able to get the data into a PC with either. John Dann www.weatherstations.co.uk |

I'm going to try something from Maplin first (£5 so probably isn't too accurate etc., but I'm ordering something else from them at the same time) which might work for the next year or so. I'll let you know how/if it works; I'll also let you have any code that I need to write to get it to work on my website. Jonathan Canterbury |

There was a project in EPE a few years ago to build your own weather station. I still have the issues somewhere and might give it a go when I've got time/money to hand. Jonathan |

Jonathon,
have you thought about the datalogger route. I have used a Digitron Monolog single channel temperature logger which can take readings every, say, five minutes. It is wireless, compact, so can be stuck anywhere. Then bring indoors at required interval (weekly, daily etc) and download via serial port to PC. Software allows graphical presentation of data etc. Only drawback might be precision only quoted at +/- 0.5C.) If you want more info or possible loan then e-mail me. Dave. |

I really want 'live' temperatures (so I can find out how cold it is at home from my lab office). Jonathan |

Thanks, Jonathan Canterbury I have a number of assembled units which accommodate up to 16 Dallas DS18S20 temperature sensors on a single twisted pair. The interface is 9600 baud RS232. TM #125 - Single Dallas DS18S20 Run TM #127 - Two Dallas DS18S20 Runs plus programmable output. TM #128 - Two Dallas runs which will accommodate DS18S20, DS18B20, DS1822 and DS2438.
