A very windy night but as the dark turned to light it got positively
stormy with frequent gusts greater than 60 mph. These alone are stronger than anything I have recorded before. Then at 07:30 there was a gust to 74 mph which brought down the ancient, massive oak tree near to my house. Such a shame and it went before its time, still mostly in leaf which probably helped its demise. The local council can tear up that preservation order now. My olive tree was partly defoliated and damaged and that is normally as tough as old, rusty nails with regards to withstanding any strong winds. Interesting that the strong winds seem to have been very localised with other nearby weather stations only recording gusts up to 45 mph. With so many trees and branches down in this small part of the Otter Valley, everywhere else seems to have survived without any damage. My previous highest gust was 58 mph on the 10th March 2008. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalleyweather.me.uk |

Nothing like that here - highest 10 min in the past few days is 33KT (one knot short of a gale)with a 49KT gust(56mph) Ken Copley Teesdale |

Highest 10-min mean is 29 knots with a max gust of 46 knots.
