Default Penzance - Overnight drizzle, fairly blue

After a few dry days the mizzle returned yesterday and 1.2mm of drizzle last night, with a minimum of 9.8C.

However, although the air still feels a bit mizzly, there are now good breaks in the very low cloud.

Helped here by what breeze there is descending, but even on windward coasts the mist is thin enough now for the sun to be visible through it and the sea to turn blue. Rather atmospheric actually

but changing rather from minute to minute.

Off the south coast

I don't envy forecasters having to predict cloud cover in these conditions.

Default Penzance - Overnight drizzle, fairly blue

The brightness of this morning soon disappeared as the cloud filled in
the blue gaps of sunshine.

This December will go down as my dullest ever with just 51.6 hours of
sunshine to date. My December average over the last 12 years has been 82
hours.

The persistent dry weather since the 24th isn't going to stop this month
from being rather wet

At least it's been mild......

A few likely 2018 stats....
Mean temp: 12.0C; warmest since 2014 (12.1C)
Sunshine: 1938 hours; sunniest since 2014 (1960 hours)
Rainfall: 854 mm; wettest since 2014 (1014 mm)

I was working on my back door about this time yesterday Sunday 30th December, taking advantage of the unseasonal anticyclone. I had just applied the first coat of paint stripper when the drizzle started. So instead of doing my job I came back to do yours.

https://archive.org/details/weatherp...aberuoft/page? contains a brief mention of such anomalies. His work is based on 19th century concepts so he goes Darwinian on astrology for which I can't blame him, a fledgeling discipline would tend to diverge rather than examine. But such are life.

My edition of Abercromby is from 1887 and you already know my views about volcanic eruptions. The previous decade was filled with such anomalies if recent weather is anything to go by. I shall be posting his work on a blog shortly along with my comments. I just need to work of the details virtually all of which were stated completely 130 years ago. And not wonder why the more expert than I can't do it better.

This morning it is dry, the low cloud is less low, but unbroken. The visibility is now very good, even at cliff top level

Clearly a very nice surfable wave today.

My highest ever January pressure (at 09:00) is 1041 on a few occasions. Looking at the model forecasts I may average that over the 1st week of January.. Normally intense anticyclones at this time of year are centred well to the E / NE of Cornwall, and we rather suffer a raw SE wind. This spell of light winds is very much appreciated after the wind & big seas of much of November & December. Even the Cove fishing fleet's been out, unsusual in mid winter. http://www.sennen-cove.com/index.htm
