Gray, overcast, calm, cold, dry.
Clear, starry skies last night allowed the temperature to fall below freezing before cloud rolled in at dawn this morning and made for a sunless day. With not a breath of wind to break up the inversion boundary, and no sunshine to warm things up the temperature did not rise above 3.6C here today. Leaving the Otter Valley behind I saw 7C above the IB; tropical. Very unusual to have a highest maximum so low, and this was the coldest since 0.7C on the 18th March (The Beast from the East). A year or two can go by without the day maximum being so low. Air pressure reached 1043.2 hPa yesterday, getting near to my record and the highest since 1043.9 hPa on the 27th December 2016. Still, the air feels crisp and with low humidity, everything has dried up nicely after all that December rain and damp. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalleyweather.me.uk |

Not too cold here, it's been between 7C & 9C for the last 48 hours at least. At last there's a good swell forecast for tomorrow. Long period (15 sec or so) and clean in light winds, 5 star rating on magicseaweed https://magicseaweed.com/Sennen-Surf-Report/4/ I'm supposed to be taking the female (majority) part of the family to M&S at Hayle tomorrow, but a detour to Porthmeor at St Ives may well be in order. Just saw a programme on 2018's wild weather, including a clip of waves battering Porthleven during a piece on storms destroying beach chalets in Norfolk (well might have been Suffolk). You'd think they'd find an archive clip from vaguely the right area. Graham Penzance |

It's not difficult to get these things right Our dull and gloomy weather goes on. The 1.7 hours of sun that we had on New Year's Day is the only sun since Christmas Eve. That makes it 11 sunless days out of the last 12 days. Only 25.5 hours in the past 30 days. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. https://peakdistrictweather.org twitter: @TideswellWeathr |
