Default Cornwall - Big swell arrives - great view from the Minack!

Minack webcam now worth a look

Tonights performance has not been cancelled, though they are offering refunds to the less hardy. They state
Updated Friday at 4pm –

"Tonight’s final performance of I, Don Quixote is almost certain to go ahead as there are many people who wish to see the show, whatever happens!

However, the wind will still be strong and the showers are heavy when they catch us! The Upper Terrace seating will be particularly exposed and the show may be difficult to hear in that area."

I'd be watching the sea!

Sea conditions have deteriorated rapidly in the last 3 or 4 hours, particularly along the south coast from Lands End to the Lizard.

They abandoned the performance at the interval.
Horrendous rain and wind.
Performers could take no more.
Half the audience not likely to return after the interval anyway.
The Cornish weather can be cruel.

I assume that's a bit tongue in cheek. Yes it was unpleasant, and they were concerned about scnery & lighting blowing around, but. .

I recorded 2mm yesterday evening, virtually the same as Lands End & Bosullow. My strongest gust was 30mph for the 24 hours to 09:00, the same as it reached on 27th July (when there was 43.8mm in the 24 hours period.) I am sheltered from the SW (as is The Minack). Even at Lands End it certainly wasn't out of the ordinary for that location http://www.landsendweather.info/ gusting to 45mph or so during the evening, it's exceeded that on several days this summer. (It exceeded 80mph during the Fastnet race disaster) In fact for the tip of Cornwall it was windier during the real easterly gale on 29th June, when the Minack didn't even consider attempting a performance (It was sunny!).

None of this is to suggest I disagree with cancelling the Boardmasters Music Festival, due to it's location & the the squally nature of the wind, I think it was a good call.

Some people took a different view of suspending things, there were plenty of moans on Facebook when they closed the Jubilee Pool early, and they were thrilled at Fistral when the surf picked up after a flat morning.
