Penzance - 1st proper thunderstorm of 2019.
Yesterday morning, from dawn to noon, was thoroughly wet & windy. The afternoon saw brief bursts of sunshine & drizzly showers.
At 23:30 really big drops hit the velux, I said 'I think it might thunder' and 2 minutes later it did. Yes, I can see into the future!
The next 45 minutes saw well 30 bright flashes, with a good deal of flickering inbetween. It was never very close and the rain never very intense. It seemed to be centred 3 miles or so to the N or NW. It all seemed cloud to cloud to me.
This morning I checked the rainfall, 26.1mm to 09:00, but of that near 15mm fell yesterday morning, and the rainfall didn't explain the big rise in the level of the stream in my garden. So I've checked Bosullow, upstream & closer to where I think the storm was centred (though possibly a bit out the other side.)
Anyway, overnight rainfall at Bosullow 27mm (total including yesterday morning 42mm) compared to 11mm & 26mm respectively for Penzance.
Lovely & sunny this morning.
A thunderstorm at last, not just a couple of distant flickers or a single flash in a hefty shower.
