Default First Solent area air frost... or is it?

As usual in clear weather, large local variations in air temperatures
last night in the "Solent" area.

Southampton Airport (12 miles inland) METARS reported minus 4C this
morning, Solent MRSC (coastal) minimum was plus 1.4C and it still
hasn't had an air frost this Autumn. My own minimum (5 miles inland)
was -1C, my first air frost this Autumn. I am in between the other
two.

Not all stations in the Solent area are equal... I am sure some other
areas have much larger variations between stations in close proximity
to each other, which can make it rather difficult to decide when any
given area has its first air frost...

Dave in the Chipstead Valley, Surrey there has been two successive nights at
minus 5C and so far 13 air frosts this autumn. 50 metrres in altitude up
the valley side and about a mile away at my Coulsdon Station just two air
frosts so far. Yesterday at 5pm the mercury was just 3C in the valley bottom
at 112 metres but walking up the valley side to the top at 170 metres it was
8C. One one occasion it was 3C on ridge and minus 8C in valley bottom. The
current total number of air frosts in 2003 for the Chipstead Valley is now
71 compared to 41 at Coulsdon.
