Brilliant. After assuming it was going to be cloudy all night, I looked
out after midnight and it had cleared. Bands of green were stretching
right across from east to west. As I watched, intense reds developed,
and a corona (?). I've tried to capture the show as far as is possible
with a camera.

Canon S50, f2.8, ISO 200, 15 secs

and yes, it was that bright!!

this links to a thumbnail index. The larger images are uncompressed
jpegs to keep pixellation to a minimum, but they are only 500 x 375 so
shouldn't take too long for those, like me, who don't have the luxury of
broadband.....

Excellent Anita. I'll have to change my film speed to 200 tonight, as
there may well be a repeat, going by the various monitoring websites.

First time I've used the digital at night and I'm well impressed with
it. I forgot to mention that none of the red/orange glow is from street
lights.

Excellent. Like you, I had given up hope of seeing anything last
night, but I went out just after midnight. There was a bright
searchlight effect to the west, with the pink directly overhead! Not
as bright as yours, but then I probably have a lot more light
pollution
