Over the weekend I was driving across country. First opportunity to see for my
own eyes just how low reservoirs are adjacent the roads between Sheffield & Manchester. Indeed, some are virtually empty with vast tracts of reservoir bed exposed. It really sank home just how dry a year 2003 has been. Next Spring/Summer could be interesting when water rationing is brought in, methinks! A friend of mine, now in his early 60s, remembers as a boy in Leeds, there were always water shortages and threats of hosepipe bans I lived there from (about) 1973 to this January, and remember two water shortages - one back in the 70s, and one about 5 years ago. Each time coincided with a *very* dry spell of water. I can't of course cast any light on your friends boy-hood experiences - I'm too young and was living in a different bit of the country! -- Surfer! And the weather shows no sign of changing from it's predominantly dry mood either. True, it's been wet over the last week or so but the models are once again predicting a return to anticyclonic conditions for the foreseable future. This should be the wettest time of the year, yet where is the zonality? As for water rationing, well I think it's a distinct possibility. Certainly if we get through to February without any decent rainfall. Col -- Bolton, Lancashire. 160m asl. http://www.reddwarfer.btinternet.co.uk |

Went up for a walk around Cod Beck resevoir near Northallerton on
Sunday, shocked at how empty it was, and this was after some significant rain on Friday and Saturday night. http://www.aozj96.dsl.pipex.com/codbeck.jpg http://www.aozj96.dsl.pipex.com/codbeck2.jpg http://www.aozj96.dsl.pipex.com/codbeck3.jpg Billy Dods |
