We're doomed!!

"The Big Chill New series examining topical scientific issues, beginning
with the growing number of scientists who are worried by the threat of
massive climatic change in Britain. Richard Alley talks about his series of
discoveries which began when he drilled the ice in Greenland and led to the
terrifying conclusion that the warming Gulf Stream could be cut off from
Britain's shores, rendering the country's climate closer to that of Alaska
or Russia in just 20 years."

Thanks Joe,

But I was remembering.

BTW Folks, don't forget the "Burning Planet" march next Tuesday. The
future of the planet is far more important than Iraq. Lets face it, with
10,000 deaths in France this summer and 4,000 in India earlier,
global warming has more casualties to its name than Iraq already.

GWB has got the US into a mess by charging into Iraq. Don't let
him get the world into a mess by charging on with burning oil
regardless.

If you think this is off topic then you are wrong. You are allowing
your political prejudices to blind you to the scientific facts that
global warming is happening and it is a serious threat to the Earth.
See "The Big Chill" if you don't believe me.

Cheers, Alastair.

What has one very hot summer got to do with climate?

Shaun.

Mortality rates are higher in winter. The reduction in these rates
brought about by a warmer climate more than offsets the increase in mortality
due to a hot summer. And you cannot be serious in suggesting that none of the
deaths referred to would have occurred in the absence of global warming.

Dug this out of the BBC TV listings page ( hope they don't mind )

Thu 13 Nov, 21:00 - 21:50 50 mins

The Big Chill

Remember that long hot summer? You might never see its like again. And all
that talk of global warming? Forget it. This season's first Horizon reveals
that a growing number of experts fear that Britain could be heading for a
climate like Alaska. Our ports could be frozen over. Ice storms could ravage
the country, and London would see snow lying on the ground for weeks on end.
It would be the biggest change in the British way of life since the last Ice
Age.

The first signs that such a disaster could happen came from deep within the
ice sheet of Greenland. Scientists discovered that the earth's past was
littered with sudden drastic drops in temperature.

The big question was: could it ever happen again? Clues came from tiny
shells at the bottom of the Atlantic; a huge glacier on the move in Arctic
and some alarming discoveries in the far north of Russia.

In the end there came the terrifying revelation: the Gulf Stream, that vast
current of water that keeps us warm, could be cut off.

According to one scientist, there's a one in two chance it will happen in
the next century. Others say a climate catastrophe could be heading our way
in just twenty years time.

Regards

Shaun Pudwell.

The deaths in France were calculated by taking the normal death toll during a
French summer and subtracting that from this year's summer death toll.

If you are saying that they would have died the following winter anyway, I can
only agree that they would have died later. We are all mortal!

But probably a more important truism is that we do not have a guarantee which
states that if this world is not suitable for the purpose to which we put it,
we can take it back and get another.

Cheers, Alastair.

So colder winters and hotter summers... sounds good to me... however
from the sounds of things the programme is will predict perminant cold
all year. I dont see why.
