That surprises me too. Here in Cranleigh, only 8 miles away, I'm
reliably informed that there was a slight shower sometime about 8:30am,
and judging by the puddles I saw I think there was probably also some
rain overnight.

Col, I think there is an element of truth in what you say. But in these days

of
litigation, auditors and bean-counters breathing down your neck what would you
do ? Also it's so easy in hindsight of course ! All in all I think the Met
Office forecasters once again did a splendid job in alerting us to the
possibilities, if it had come off fully (or even stronger) then nothing much
would have been said on here I suspect. Also don't forget that the Met Office
predicted areas in terms of percentage risk, these were not far out in the

Irish
Sea region but perhaps too high over Scotland and northern Ireland, but would
anyone else had done any better ? I doubt it.

In these increasingly litagatious times, I can't blame them.
It's just very sad that our forecasts have effectively become distorted
to account for this trend.
If severe gales are forecast and then it's just a bit windy then the public
just sighs with relief and nobody bothers with the fact that they got it
wrong. But if it's the other way round.......
Admittedly with this storm they were already pulling back on the expected
windspeeds this morning, compared to what was being forecast last night.
In fact as soon as I woke up this morning and heard nothing I knew that
something was up.

Incidentally, has anybody ever tried suing the Met Office?
I would imagine it would be rather difficult in practice.
I think you would have to prove negligence to the extent that procedures
weren't followed that stopped vital information getting through, rather
than just a situation in which the forecasters to the best of their knowledge
predict one thing, but in fact turns out to do another.

To be honest Phil they said that England would only see little if any
rainfall due to the quick passage of fronts.

Quite. The "crying wolf" effect springs to mind. Cry wolf too many times and
when you really do need to get it right, no-one believes you :-(

Cheers.

so many leaves left on the trees.

I'm in the middle (IOM) most definitely agree, just a routine blow.

Yes, but (though IANAL and all that) I think it might be dangerous to
assume that only under-forecasting would be subject to that sort of
thing. It's not hard to imagine over-forecasting having the same
problems.

Phil, that is very surprising.
Mind you I only managed 9.2 mm up to 1800 today which for these parts is

not
much more than a scotch mist :-)

Here in West Wales, I recorded 40mm for the 24 hours up to 1700 today.

I am in an area that was supposed to have been hit by high winds. I do not
have a wind gauge yet (roll on Christmas g) but the wind did not keep me
awake last night and today I could see little evidence of debris on the
roads.

John,

Just to confirm, it did rain here, but not enough to make a recording.

I dont appear to be alone. Heathrow at 06z reported a Trace for the last
12hrs, and again at 18z,

and according to weatheronline, many stations in the SE also reported no
more than a trace.including Odiham, Redhill & Manston.

I only recorded 1.3mm here in St Albans so I am not surprised as the fronts
were quite fragmented by the time they reached the South East. Got a little
rain from th bent back occlusion which just brushed past to the north.
