A good friend of mine has asked me to find out how severe the *winds*were
during the night of 27/28 December 2001 in Dunbeg which I believe is near
Oban,Scotland.Using Google there is little on the subject presumably because
said winds were not exceptional. However can anybody please suggest a website
or link which would provide details of average windspeed/gusts in that area
?
There were a few comments on the wind/cold/snow in this forum at the
relevant time but nothing substantial.
Anything relevant to this enquiry would be appreciated.
Thanks.

(December 2001)
The 27th was very WINDY as a vigorous LOW near Iceland moved southeast -
ending up over Denmark on the 28th: deepening rapidly as it passed
Scotland, with widespread strong to GALE-force winds. SEVERE GALES in
the north & east of Britain on the 27th/28th, with GUSTS to 75 to 85kn
in the Western Isles on the 27th, and to 68kn at St. Bees Head (Cumbria)
on the 28th. (75knots = 86mph; 85kn = 98mph: the latter gust was
isolated IIRC so not typical of the system, but obviously of interest)

Hi, Martin,

I remember that nasty little storm well. Max gust here (Copley) was 64kn
with highest 10min speed of 41kn (force 9). Gale force was maintained
from 06Z to 11Z 28th December, then in the afternoon the wind veered
NWly and pulled in snow showers. The gale went as quickly as it arrived
with calm, 6cm lying snow and -3C by 23Z.

The cold weather lasted well into January with 10cm lying snow,
screen -9C and ground -17C.

Severe, sudden gales such as that one seem to herald cold spells in our
area (imho).

Passed through as a gale here, at it's worst shortly after midnight on
the 28th with some stormy north-westerly gusts. The top gust being 67mph
here just before 3am.
I do remember the hype surrounding the build up to it though, predictions
and forecasts of blizzards were common place. But very little snow fell from
the system in the central lowlands. I'm certain the Western highlands would
have had a far more severe night than here though, and probably stole any
snow that might have been bound for this area.
