Indeed there is - I saw it in operation once. It is (or was) just to the south of the summit of Sticks Pass (goes from Glenridding to Stanah) at about 2,500'. Approximate GR is NY 342 180. I've had some splendid winter days up on Helvellyn, the best being a round of Swiral & Striding Edges when the crest of Striding Edge was hidden under a thick layer of snow. It was somewhat easier (given I was wearing plastic winter boots & step-in crampons) than in summer conditions. It was also incredibly cold by the time I got back to Glenridding, and there was an 'incident' when a cornice dropped on some lads trying the gully to the S. of Striding Edge. A silly thing to do really - the snow above about 300' hadn't been through any thaw/freeze cycles so the cornice was not very well attached. They were lucky - no serious injuries - but I spotted someone else walking out past the line where the next section was going to drop. I have a photo somewhere with their footprints, taken from a vantage point that clearly shows their folly. -- Surfer! If you really want to send me email then use: five_cats at uk2 dot net |

Hi, everyone, Yes, "cupra" is quite correct, in fact the slopes at Swinhope Head in Weardale are quite good and reliable, I understand. I think the Langdon Beck site in Teesdale has closed down, though, perhaps more to do with locals complaining about roads being blocked, not by snow, but by skiers' cars! (Best to keep it quiet, like we do about a lot of things up here - especially quality of life). Still very dry in Copley, btw, 37mm (50%) this month and 505mm (69%) so far in 2003. Yad Moss is still there and AFAIK still operational, after last year I'd be surprised if it wasn't. They actually managed to get some sking in last year... -- Cheers Dave. pam is missing e-mail |
