1. Rainfall in period 30/0900Z (Nov) to 01/0900Z (Dec) = 13.2mm; 8mm of
that fell before midnight last night, remainder from ocnl heavy rain rest of night & earlier this morning. The 5mm or so after midnight not significantly affecting the whole-month analysis. (NB: at 01/13Z ... still raining, with some 6 mm since 09Z reading). 2. Total rainfall for November 2003 = 153.3 mm (232% of eLTA); this was the wettest *any* month since last November, and the wettest November since ... last November! 3. Using a value of 100mm, and assuming that our record and Beaufort Park's are similar (they are to within 4%), gives rise to the following analysis (100mm is roughly mean + 1sd of the 1971-2000 average for November): 1971-1980 (10yr): 1 event (1974); nearest-next value 86.6mm/1976 1981-1990 (10yr): 0 events; nearest value meeting criterion 90.0mm/1982 1991-2000 (10yr): 3 events; nearest-next value 87.8mm/1997 for this current decade, we have already had *2* such events, 2002 = 191.3mm and this year (as above). It will be interesting to see over the coming few years if this increased number of wet Novembers is maintained. 4. Running total rainfall Jan-Nov c.f. mean for that period: Total to 01/0900Z DEC = 537.7mm % anomaly (to end Nov.)= 85% % anomaly (of year mean)= 76% (Driest calendar year in BP 1971-2002 record = 487mm/1990 - if it were to stop raining now [unlikely], then this year would be the third-driest year in the 1971-2003 dataset, behind 1990/487mm and 1973/514mm; if we have *average* rainfall now for December/70mm, then this would give 608mm: there were 7 drier years in that period in the composite BP/Tawfield record.) 5. The daily temperature anomaly was +2.2degC (1971-2000 eLTA) after at one point running well above +3.5degC. The warmth of the month shows up best in the mean 24hr minima, with the all-month anomaly +3.0degC. No doubt headline summaries in years to come will lay down this November as "Very mild & wet", but in fact a large slice of the month here was "Warm & dry"! Iv'e recorded 115.2mm of rain in Penzance this November, slightly below the
1971-2000, and well below my 1991-2002 average. November is on average the wettest month of the year here, but there have been a large number of very wet November's in the last decade. The 1961-90 average November rainfall for Penzance was 131mm, the figure for 1992-2003 is a huge 162mm. 1992 to 2002 saw 14 months with 200mm, 6 of these were Novembers.
