Default Red Alert Level 1

The departement of Hérault in the South of France has now been placed
on Red Alert Level 1 and Metéo France say the situation in the region
of Montpellier is potentially catastrophic. Metéo France have only
issued this level of alert once before I believe.
Colin can correct me :-)

In respect to what? Nuclear Fallout (did hear an odd bump a while
back...), Sunshine (not up here, though the Hill Fog has lifted a
bit), Wind (none of that either), Snow (to warm), Cold (see Snow)
guess it must be rain then?

Iris - the dreadful images of the floods in the south of France figured
large in the BBC1 1pm news today. There has already been loss of life and
sadly there is little respite in the offing.

Mike,

Thanks for your sympathetic response. If Dave knew anything about
French weather forecasting he would appreciate that the Red Alert is
only used in the most exceptional circumstances. Red Alert not my
words, but those of the French authorities who are calling this a
natural catastrophe.

Dave, I have a sense of humour, but there are times when it is not
appropriate. I was reporting factually from Metéo France on a very
serious weather situation. Now I suppose I shall get all the net
nanny mails from the usual suspects. Don't waste time posting them
please.

Hi Iris,

Just out of interest, when did Meteo France flag up this situation? I
mentioned in a post on the 30th Nov about the potential of some very serious
rainfall in SE France/NW Italy but it wasn't picked up on here at all.

"Also watching model developments indicating a convergence zone combined
with
a cold pool of upper air over SE France/N Italy which could give some REAL
problems in the next few days."

Granted, there is very little one can do with regards to flooding, but the
GFS showed this situation developing last week, hope the affected residents
were provided with ample warning.

Cheers

A

Montpellier has had some very large totals reported in the last 24 hrs. Here
are some figures :-

41mm in the 12 hrs to 6am today
85mm in the 6 hrs to 12Z today :-
of which 78mm fell in 3 hrs and 32mm in 1 hr (07Z to 08Z)
23mm in the 3hrs to 15Z today

149mm in the 21 hrs since 6pm Tuesday. Some locations nearby would clearly
have had more than this,....

Regards
Paul

Hi Andrew,

As far as I can see, this was first forecast last Saturday, 29th
November. I've checked it out with French friends too and they are
sure that was when the first warnings were issued. I am a long way
from it, but it must be terrible - violent winds, torrential rain and
thunderstorms altogether.

They said on the news that they were 'on a war footing'.
I wonder if this means they will be collabarating with the weather?
