Default Fog and forecasts

Having listened to the forecasts all day yesterday and checked my
seaweed, when the 200 meter fog duly arrived mid evening
I thought thats it ,settle down and stoke up the fire ,when all of a sudden
,the moon disappeared ,temps jumped up a couple of degrees and the
visibility went up to near a kilometer, fog ,what fog ?.and it stayed that
way all night .
Now why was that lads ? quite often in this part of the world a breeze picks
up during foggy spells lifting it into low stratus ,and thereby cutting off
any more cooling.
Is that what happened over most of South East England last night ,or did a
patch of cloud do the necessary ?
Actually it began to fog up again after dawn with a temp fall so maybe the
cloud patch seems the most likely scenario.
As a veteran of the 1953 great London smog believe me this stuff is like a
June morning mist !

I noticed that too - up until about 10pm-ish (I think) it was hovering
around 1.5°C-2°C and then it jumped to about 4°C. It's currently 3.5°C a
foggy (I'd guess around 200m visibility, but I can't actually see that
far out of my window!).

Happened here too, but then shot down from 3 to -0.7 by around 9:30 as the
fog began to clear. Clear and sunny now but still below zero.
