ADVANCE WARNING OF SEVERE WEATHER

Here is an ADVANCED WARNING of Heavy Snow affecting Northern Scotland,
Eastern Scotland, South West Scotland, Northern Ireland, North West England,
North East England, The Midlands, Wales, South East England and East Anglia
AND Lincolnshire.
Issued by the Met Office at 10:30 on Friday, 19 December 2003.
This warning is an update to that issued at 11:02 on Thursday, 18 December

The Met Office is expecting a low pressure system to move east across
northern England tomorrow with rain turning to snow over the Southern
Uplands, the Grampians and perhaps the northern Pennines.
Note that there has been a change in the timing and track of this low
relative to yesterdays ideas.
Once the low moves away, winds will turn to the north or north-east, as
mentioned before, with frequent showers turning wintry and locally heavy.
These may affect northern Irish Sea coastal areas on Sunday, but in
particular, they will transfer to northern and eastern counties of Scotland
and England. Several cm of snow is possible locally with some drifting in
gale-force winds, which could lead to disruption of transport. There is
still some doubt about exact details relating to the severity of the weather
and this is reflected in the relatively low risk assessments given above for
most of the regions.
For inquires regarding this warning - please contact your regional Met
Office.
Transmitted by the Met Office. at 10:30 on Friday 19 December

This warning will be updated tomorrow morning unless superseded by Flash
Messages.

I just have to say that I like the way the met office is handling this.
Even if it all comes to nothing, I really like the daily bulletin, gives
me something to look forward to in the morning!
Well done Met Office!

Is the new track of the low slightly worse for snow in the S.E? It looks as
though it is drifting slightly East and taking the colder air that way. Also
looks like Saturday is now colder than originally forecast but the mild air
may arrive very quickly after any snow Sun/Mon.

Yep, it doesnt look as good, more of a NW wind I'm afraid, means the snow
will do well to reach south of suffolk, unless there are some complications
of course. Most places in SE will probably see a little snow, maybe a light
shower. Still time for things to change though I suppose.

I'm travelling in Norfolk up to around 6pm on Sunday, maybe the snow will
hold off until after (?). Seems like theres little chance of it following me
home to Bedfordshire though

Here's hoping for clear roads on Saturday, snow on Sunday to keep the
cheimophiles happy, clear roads on Monday, then it can snow all it likes on
Tuesday and Wednesday, then clear roads on Friday and Saturday, and it can
do what it likes after that until mid-January, I don't mind.

Anne, I wish that all your journeys are safe.
Please take care on those potentially icy roads.

I share your first two wishes...

I am driving from Rayleigh, Essex to Dover, Kent! in the early hours of Monday morning.

Driving onto the "PRIDE OF KENT" which leaves Dover at 9:15 and arrives in Calais some 90 mins
later.

Stacking up on some beer and wine and returning home in the evening.

I hope we have a calm crossing and roads clear of ice/snow.

(BTW, [off topic comment], Dover-Calais: only £15 return for car + 2 adults...
