Default BBC news headline: what a lot of cobblers!

I've just got to laugh when I see headlines like this:

"Drivers warned as snow sweeps in"

full 'report' he

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3337717.stm

coupled with a caption under a picture of a snowy road:

"Snow and severe weather conditions will hit much of the country"

How do they define *much* of the country?

Well, apparently Scotland and eastern England in this case, although
Alex Deakin thinks that the showers may extend further west.

Yet again the 'meeja' (coupled with the Met Office) are crying wolf. I
would be extremely surprised if there was any appreciable snowfall
away from the east coast and Scotland.

Doesn't this type of sensationalist and inaccurate news
reporting/forecasting get on your nerves? Sadly it's all too prevalent
these days, irrespective of what news the 'meeja' decide to try and
force down our collective gullets.

Minor rant over.

Hi Phil,

Not only the 'meeja'. I'm sitting here 15 miles from the East Coast and
there's been not a single flake of snow anywhere near here. By the warnings
on the Met Office website and the telly I was expecting to be up to my naffs
in the stuff by now. Everything is running down the North Sea because of the
wind direction.

Just looked out of the window (forecasting tip for Met Office) and it's
clear with all constellations visible. Barometer is still rising and wind is
still West of North. I just can't see this snow materialising at all.

2200Z observations

Screen Temp : 0.1°C
Dew Pt : -3.7°C
Sky : clear
Wind : NNW5-6

On the D2 sat loop you can just make out some cloud heading SW towards NE
Scotland, maybe the start of the wind direction change that will be needed.

I was over in St Petersburg when I read this and it made me laugh. but if I
hadn't been used to the over exaggeration of the weather forecasts it would
have given me a totally inaccurate picture of the weather in the UK -
certainly the uk weather was not worse than that in StP despite the
forecast!

just bad luck on visitors who might believe this garbage I guess.
