Default Online reference standards for met. measurements

Hi, I'm playing around with building a small microcontroller based logging /
PC connected weather station.

Can anyone please point me in the direction of some online resources that
might detail things like:

1) Recommended mounting standards for anemometers / vanes etc (clearance,
height etc).

2) Algorithms etc for calculating wind speed averages and gusts etc.

3) Algorithms etc for calculating wind direction averages etc.

I tried the "World Meteorological Organisation" as a lot of documents seem
to refer to their standards / recommentations but I could not find anything
of relevance on their site.

Thanks for any pointers.

regards
Rob

The definitive standard in my day was "The Handbook of Meteorologial
Instruments" published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO).

I don't know if the standard applies today but the book is available
widely from the usual sources (Amazon, Internet Bookshop etc).

Hi Rob,
might be worth taking a look through uk sci weather FAQ on the following URL

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/booty.weather/uswfaqfr.htm

best regards,

.... there are a few ideas in there, specifically in Section 6C. However,
I would be the first to admit that it won't answer the questions you
have posed at 2 and 3 above. Also, the link
http://www.weatherstations.co.uk/ might yield some information.

Over the past couple of years, the 'Weather' magazine has carried a
series of articles on the Met enclosure by I.C. Strangeways ... again,
not exactly what you asked for (on-line), but I believe that the Royal
Met.Soc are going to (have?) put some of thier articles on line.

Martin.

Have a dig about on the Met Office site, there are some Guides for
Observers that I'm resonable sure cover sensor siting etc. There might
also be some information about wind gust/mean speed & direction
calculation. All I can remember ATM is that my Wx Station (WM918)
doesn't use the right time intervals for it's gust/mean speed.
