If you are in lowland Manchester then snow is pretty rare.
I know, I've lived there

I am in Bolton and I am expecting an hour or so of rather wet snow,
giving a covering and a rather wintry scene before the rain sets in.
Having said that however snow situations are very marginal in this
country and it wouldn't take much of a shift in conditions to give me
just rain with a few sleety bits or indeed several hours of heavy
snow giving several inches accumulation.

That's the facinating thing about the weather, you just never know

Hi Col,
Hmm, I don't like to sound 'bitchy' , and I certainly don't mean to be, but
I really can't agree with you there. It seems we never see proper snow now,
full stop, and well... you just 'do know'. Well, that's only my opinion, and
I hope you are right in the years to come.
Best regards,
Danny.

Danny,

I wasn't making a general comment about the likelihood of 'proper'
snow in this country more the chances of seing it in Bolton tonight!

As I'm sure you realise, the synoptic situation liable to produce heavy
snow in Bolton is very different from that which is liable to produce
heavy snow in Whitstable.

I am at 500ft.
I know from experience in these kind of snow situations where snow is
expected 'on the hills' that I may get nothing or a substantial fall.

We shall see!

Exactly, I am in Failsworth (midway between Manchester and Oldham) and the
snow we get is pathetic! I remember building snowmen in my garden nearly
every year in the 80's and have walked through several inches on the
pavements which seemed to stay around for ages. Now I am lucky if there is
enough to make a snowball (and then it is more like slushy ice).

However, saying all that, I am not sure I want to see the prolonged arctic
conditions predicted by the gulf stream switching off!

Looks finely balanced.

The 1800-2400Z low level forecast suggests occasional snow overland north of
53N.

The Manchester TAF itself has sleet :-

EGCC 311505Z 311601 17012KT 8000 FEW015 BECMG 1619 16015G25KT
TEMPO 1701 4000 RASN BKN010=

I wouldn't be surprised to see Manchester report snow for a time.

Jon.

I think we are going to get rain, seems relatively warm at the moment (the
car thermometer was saying +1.5C half an hour ago, up from -1.5C at
lunchtime)

The air temp here has dropped from +4C to +3C in the last hour, and the rain is
beginning to turn to sleet. Actually, just looking out the window, it's now
snowing heavily.

Doubt it'll stick though.

Paul.
