Annual Precipitation (wettest to driest, selection of low lying stations):
Corfu: 1157.6 mm Methoni: 924.4 mm Andravida: 817.3 mm Samos: 783 mm Kythira: 754 mm Rhodes: 633.5 mm Mytilini: 618 mm Irakleion: 590.5 mm Terpsithea, SE Athens: 565.9 mm Limnos: 511.8 mm Naxos: 495.1 mm Zografou, E Athens: 475.4 mm Elliniko, S Athens: 457.1 mm Mikra, Thessaloniki: 453 mm Alexandroupolis: 367.6 mm Comments, things to remember (might be a bit Athens-centric) - January: Very mild weather during the first days of the year; temperature reaches +21.8C at Lamia on Jan 4th. Temperatures drop considerably on Jan 11th and widespread snowfalls cause problems over western and parts of central and eastern Macedonia. A fortnight later, the prefecture of Karditsa, in central Greece, declares a state of emergency because of the heavy downpours of rain. Damages are caused to the road network of northern Attica and the island of Lesvos on Jan 26th. The end of the month sees parts of the western country declaring a state of emergency, too (Achaia). Streams and rivers overflow in western and central parts of the country. - February: Heavy thunderstorms bring the road network of eight cycladic isles to a halt on Feb 20th. Two days later, some of these islands wake up under a 15 cm snow cover. Until the end of the month, ski resorts close down because of excess snow accumulations (up to 7 metres on Mt Pilio and Dirfys). Dozens of villages face power shortage problems. Much of Athens sees lying snow on several occasions. This was one of the coldest Februaries in record. - March: 400-year-old trees are uprooted in central and southern Greece on Mar 17th. Gusts reach 84 mph at Kythira. Snow lying even in the centre of Athens on March 24th. Some isles that hardly ever receive snow report snow on the same day (Kos, Karpathos). - April: Intense snowfalls throughout Macedonia down to sea level on April 6th and 7th. Snow accumulations reach 54 cm (1' 9'') in Ptolemaida, 7 cm in Thessaloniki (centre), 35 cm in Kastoria (drifts up to 45 cm). Lying snow and still weather brings a new record low temperature for Kastoria (-14C) and Kozani (-8C) on April 8th and 9th respectively. Fruit crops are severly damaged. - May: +36.7C in Athens on May 11th. A waterspout is observed by the coasts of Athens on May 25th. 113 mm of rain at Ierapetra, Crete, on May 29th. - June: Warmest June since records began at the Thission station in Athens, with an average maximum temperature of +33.9C (dev +4.1). 98.7 mm of rain during the intense thunderstorm at Nikaia, western Athens, on June 17th. C-g thunders set the dry grass on fire outside Athens on the same day. A truck driver loses control of the vehicle when the latter was hit by lightning and drives himself into a cliff -and death. Ioannina, in the northwest of the country, sees a severe thunderstorm on June 20th, that causes dozens of tress be uprooted, people get injured and cars destroyed. On the same day, a tornado hits Amaliada, in the western Peloponnese, causing lots of material damages. - July: Nea Filadelfia, Athens, reports +42C on July 4th. An intense thunderstorm hits the area of Thessaloniki on July 19th, causing damages to the city's eastern suburbs and the 'Macedonia' airport. - August: Two people get killed when hit by lightning in Chalkidiki, Macedonia, on August 9th. 109 mm of rain at Corfu on August 27th. +40.2C in SE Athens on the month's last day. - September: Waterspouts around Corfu and Lefkas on Sep 10th. Temperatures at Kastoria drop to +4.8C on Sep 6th after a dramatic drop during the first days of the month. - October: Wettest October in ten years in the northwest of the country: Ioannina reports a monthly accumulation of 270 mm. Peak gusts reach 101 kph at Skyros on October 9th; small vessels are brought ashore around the country and several boats are in danger. Electricity cutoffs in the agglomeration of Athens, several trees uprooted. Thick fog during the first days of the month in the Saronic gulf. Severe thunderstorms over the northern Ionian and Epirus on October 19th. - November: Irakleion, Crete, sees its November maximum temperature record smashed on Nov 4th, when it reports +32.4C. Waterspout over the Saronic gulf on Nov 3rd. November 4th is the wettest day of the year around Athens, with daily accumulations between 50 and 80 mm. Maximum rainfall intensity at this site reaches 155.7 mm/h. Present from the north: the aurora borealis is visible from Athens (!) on November 20th. - December: Snow lying around Macedonia on Dec 7th. Snowfalls in and around Athens on Dec 17th. Tripolis, in the Peloponnese, records -7.8C on Dec 19th. Over 205 mm of rain is reported at Zarakes, Evia isl, during the Dec 23-25th period. Widespread frost over much of central and northern Greece towards the end of the month. Oh well, 2003's had its interesting moments. Roll on, 2004!
