There is a nasty well for me good area of low pressure heading across the
southern half of the country
or along the channel , hard to say at this time but this one could be very
deep in pressure !

Maybe they mean gale force winds and the possibility of blizzards in the
north over high ground?

From the BBC weather warning:

Issued Friday 9 January.
SEVERE GALES AND HEAVY RAIN
A very energetic weather pattern is expected across Britain over the next
few days. Monday's likely to see the peak with a very intense area of low
pressure. Southern Britain is most likely to see storm force winds and heavy
rain possibly resulting in structural damage and flooding.

Hi Sarah,

It looks as if the strong jet will develop and quickly drive a secondary low across
the English Channel on Monday, roughly situated over Isles of Scilly at 12z. Models
are fairly consistent with the track, taking the strongest winds, maybe storm force,
over English Channel and far southern Britain. NW France does look as if it will bear
the brunt. Heavy rain also will be a feature, 15-20mm over a large area according to
GFS.
