![]() The winter of 1947 was largely responsible for the mass emigration of nearly 1 million people from Britain in the next 15 years. These people went to Australia, New Zealand and Canada. My family emigrated to NZ at the end of 1957, and the 1947 winter had nothing to do with it. The great London smogs of the early 50s did, though - my father's mother died in one. (A more important factor than the climate was that the money was better). A cousin emigrated to Labrador soon after; hardly in search of better weather, but she could count on there being no smog. ======== Email to "j-c" at this site; email to "bogus" will bounce ======== Jack Campin: 11 Third Street, Newtongrange, Midlothian EH22 4PU; 0131 6604760 http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/purrhome.html food intolerance data & recipes, Mac logic fonts, Scots traditional music files and CD-ROMs of Scottish music. |
