Neil, you forgot "at least it will be mild".
Penny Tranter (R4, 1755 yesterday) said it would be very mild but managed to make a pig's ear out of even that simple statement. She said "temperatures 12 at best but feeling cold". The "at best" implies "a bit chilly" yet 12°C is very mild for January as she may know. As for the "but feeling cold" I suppose it's windchill etc. etc. but 12°C in winter never feels cold to a normally-clad person. In the event it was coldish (about 6°C here) so she got that right by default. You can't blame her for the hopeless wind forecast but I do sometimes wonder about her. Louise Lear on Breakfast (deputising for Carol Kirkwood) said this morning that the heavy rain associated with the low is "great news for the gardens" If it was June yes - but in the middle of winter? The BBC should allow their presenters to concentrate on technical information only instead of this nonsense. |

This is very relevant for the gardens. Not for now of course, but for next summer. If the reservoirs/aquifiers are not replenished by stready winter rains there will be water shortages this summer.
