MET OFFICE STATEMENT ON UNEXPECTED SNOWFALL
MET OFFICE News Release issued by the Government News Network on 14
January 2004
The Met Office has issued a statement saying the snow that has hit
Wales, the Midlands and Eastern England today came from a weather
system which was particularly difficult to forecast. The prolonged and
heavy rain turned readily to snow as temperatures fell further than
expected.
Conditions are expected to improve later today, but further wintry
conditions can be expected for some areas over the next few days.

It'd be nice if the MO front page forecasts were changed to reflect this.

PA WeatherCentre are clearly being extremely magnanimous, not
rubbing salt into this one ... their media forecasts issued mid-morning
yesterday included sleet at low levels and snow over higher ground,
while their local authority forecasts (for gritting) gave 5-10cm for
Powys, and probability of wet snow for Northants, Bucks, Herts,
Cambs, etc.

Clearly, not unexpected to everyone.

Two bad forecasts from the MO in as many days, what next?

This is the second time they have predicted differently from the Met Office
and have been right.

As my post said (12/1) accuracy seems much better then the Met Office.

.... as someone who has tried to defend the Met Office, I have to say
that this was somewhat surprising as we (on this newsgroup) were all
expecting an advection of a colder airmass from the north or northwest
as the low that caused all the problems on Monday slipped away. This
weather type is quite common in January in what is essentially a cold
air mass.

Martin.

Just a thought; how many experienced forecasters have left the Met Office
due to the move to Exeter from Bracknell? I'm not saying this is the reason
for the errors but today's 'unexpected snowfall' event together with the
previous poor forecast on Monday is an unfortunate coincidence at the very
least.
