Although I expected it to be windy I did not expect to see the lamp
posts swaying and hear the telegraph wires humming. Strogest wind of the winter for this area anyway. Is there some wave effect going on here? ================================================ Simon Sheaf Sheffield South Yorkshire http://www.anycities.com/user/yorkshireweather ================================================ |

Is there some wave effect going on here? It is almost certainly a lee wave effect by the Pennines. There was quite a marked increase of wind speed with height near you (up to a mean of 55 knots at around 3000 feet) and a slightly unstable layer just above mountain top height - above the low level inversion. The surface 15kn westerly veered quite rapidly to a very strong NW with height. Here is the 12z Nottingham ascent: http://weather.uwyo.edu/cgi-bin/soun...912&STNM=03354 -- Mike 55.13°N 6.69°W Coleraine posted to uk.sci.weather 19/01/2004 19:33:20 UTC Temp +9.9C Pressure 1015mb falling slowly |

Is there some wave effect going on here? ================================================ Simon Sheaf Sheffield South Yorkshire http://www.anycities.com/user/yorkshireweather ================================================ Hi Simon, There's a marked inversion around 1100m on both the 12z RAF Waddington and Nottingham ascents, hence strong winds to the lee of high ground. These should decline throughout the night as pressure falls from the E and the flow veers. Also of note today are some serious rainfall amounts falling in NW Scotland. I look forward to Colin's report this evening, I imagine two to three inches isn't out of the question. HTH Joe PS A very wet day here too in Manchester with non-stop drizzle, EGCC METARs illustarte the horrible day we've had - http://www.meteocentre.com/cgi-bin/g...NG=en&DELT=024 |

Mild, but not mild enough to be interesting and windy enough to be unpleasant but not strong enough to be interesting. Oh yes and rain, but not heavy enough to be interesting.......... Yuk!
