Maxima: Oslo -6C, Stockholm 2C, Helsinki -1C Minima Oslo -12C, Stockholm -9C, Helsinki -11C That was with a high just west of Norway and NNE winds blowing over the eastern and central parts of Scandinavia. -- Mike 55.13°N 6.69°W Coleraine posted to uk.sci.weather 20/01/2004 21:20:50 UTC Temp +7.9C Pressure 1020mb rising |

IIRC, in Jan 1987 just before the real cold hit the UK, the mid day temp in Helsinki on Fri 9th Jan was around -33C!!. Please correct me someone if I'm wrong. My actual archived records only go back to 1990 but that was noted individually at the time because of its severity. Still, an Arctic blast into Scandi would bring them down pretty suddenly. |

Does that mean there is more potential for heavier showers? (Albeit probably
of sleety stuff if we can't drop the temperatures low enough)... Paul "Pete B" wrote in message ... "Keith (Southend)" wrote in message ... Oh yes, I am aware that this is not particularily cold, but it doesn't
look like any mild air is going to change things, infact I would expect tomorrows to be a little lower, and so on. When it comes to snow I won't get optomistic until I see the temperature below 0°c, here in Southend-on-Sea it's been a long time since the temperature hasn't gone above freezing during the day. Interesting the 1963 comparison, thankyou Mike. My data for Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Lowest Maximum temperatures recorded. 1st January 1997 the my max was -2°c. 31st December 1996 -2°c 26th January 1996 -2°c 2nd January 1993 -1°c 7th February 1991 -4°c Other notable low maximums. 12th January 1987 -6.5° 1st January 1979 -4.5°c 21st Feb 1986 -3°c 15th February 1979 -2.5°c 31st December 1978 -4°c ** January 2004 -*.*°c (Watch this space :-) Keith (Southend) ******************************** 'Weather Home & Abroad' http://www.southendweather.net ******************************** COL Station for Southend-on-Sea http://www.wunderground.com/weathers...p?ID=IESSEXSO1 ******************************** Reply to: kreh'at'southendweather'dot'net All mail scanned for virus's using Norton 2003 |

If the showers are heavy enough they will turn to snow, it even happened last week in Northamptonshire in a much milder airstream. |
