Default Today's model interpretation (22/07/03)

Here is today's look at charts for noon (GMT) on Saturday.
Issued 0610z, 22/07/03.

ECMWF: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Recm1201.gif
Low pressure lies to the SW of the UK, bringing moderate southerlies and
SSE'lies to most areas. The low deepens and moves NE'wards to the east of
Scotland at T+144. with moderate northerlies and NW'lies over the UK. The
low deepens further and moves NNW'wards to the NW of Shetland at T+144, with
westerlies for northern parts of the UK; gale force westerlies cover the far
north of Scotland. A weak trough covers England and Wales, with SW'lies in
advance and northerlies behind.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.gif
The UK lies under a SW'ly flow, with low pressure to the NW. The winds
become WSW'lies as the low fills at T+144.

GFS: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn1081.gif
Westerlies associated with a weak ridge cover the UK. By T+120 the winds
become SSW'lies for all, as high pressure ridges over Germany. 850hPa
temperatures range from +3C over NE Scotland to +6C over Cornwall. Low
pressure moves NNE'wards at T+144 to lie to the NW of Scotland, leading to
moderate west and SW'lies over the UK. Lighter westerlies cover the UK at
T+168 as a ridge builds over Biscay. A ridge builds over the North Sea on
day 8, with SW'lies for Northern Ireland and Scotland; England and Wales
lies under much lighter winds. Low pressure deepens and moves eastwards to
the NW of Scotland on day 9, resulting in moderate SW'lies for most. The low
deepens to the west of the Faroes on day 10, with westerlies over the UK.

JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.gif
SW'lies and westerlies cover the UK, with a ridge over Biscay and low
pressure to the SW of Iceland. 850hPa temperatures range from +3C over NW
Scotland to +6C over SE England.

GEM http://meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120_e.html
Lows lie to the SW and WNW of the UK, bringing SW'lies for all. The lows
merge and deepen over Northern Ireland at T+144, with moderate cyclonic
winds over the UK. Westerlies cover much of the UK at T+168 as the low moves
NNE'wards over Scotland. The westerlies become lighter on day 8 as the low
fills and drifts slowly northwards. By day 9, light westerlies cover most of
the UK, as is the case on day 10.

MM5: http://rain.mmm.ucar.edu/mm5/plots/n...6hrn.hr120.gif
A deep low covers northern Scotland, with SW'ly gales over most of the UK
(westerlies over Northern Ireland).

In summary, the majority of the runs show a low to the NW for the weekend,
with the Canadian, ECM and GFS runs showing a secondary low to the SW or
WSW. However, the runs differ with regards to the track and intensity of the
secondary low, so as ever more runs are needed.
