-6C last night after that dramatic cold front. We have now around 6 inches
of snow here in S Cambridgeshire making this the heaviest accumulation since February 1991. I think it is fair to say we got our money's worth with this cold spell, and with regard to the forecasts the independent ones such as Metcheck proved the best. I can't forget BBC Look East on Monday lunchtime saying "not as much as we thought". "I think most places will only get a dusting of snow"!!?. I mean really. What is that for goodness sake? No wonder the BBC have been given some stick on the Hutton Enquiry. They say what suits them. If you want a decent weather forecast then turn to the Internet and look at Metcheck and TWO. -- ************************************************** ************************** ************************************************** * Gavin Staples. website updated regularly www.gavinstaples.com For the latest lecture in the Darwin Lecture Series in Cambridge, please click on my site, and then click on the Darwin Lecture series link. They may be good at forecasting for South Cambridgeshire, but an avoidable source for an outlook north of the border. Except when they copy the short range GFS. As far as I'm aware - they didn't realise that yesterday's front would be anything special. I believe it was myself and Steve Loft on this newsgroup who warned the South to "watch out". Having ran comparison forecasts from various internet sites on my website for a year now, the best of the lot for this area is undoubtedly http://www.weather-online.net And I'm sure their forecasts for your local town would wipe the floor with the above sites you mention. I'm not advertising, just exercising a form of quality control. Alex. |

I would certainly back you up on that. Taking account of the 7:55 R4 forecast with its "a band of snow passing through the midlands late morning" or something like that, the BBC weather site (yes OK!) synoptic, satellite and radar images, I was thinking and hour or so's cloud and light snow flurry between 08:45 and 10:00 and then perfectly clear skies was the second front going through. It wasn't until your posting regarding the front that I realised this was not so, this backed up by observation of the latest MetO chart that I realised something more was to come. I was then able to, through occasional monitoring of this group 'follow' the front down to estimate when it would pass here, almost bang on time and bang on weather. I don't believe this was much more than a light dusting of snow. Not
according to what I noticed here -about an inch or so and from those pictures in the link to the BBC. The snow fell at night and was followed immediately by clear skies and a frosty night. -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |
