Laugh? I nearly pee'd myself laughing. Indeed, I looked smugger than His

It's during those moments that you realise there IS a vengeful God.

Something similar happened 5 or so years ago when I was on the A2 and
encountered a souped-up Escort containing 4 yobs, which had suddenly come
up behind me (I was doing 70+ mph) with a fanfare of horns and flashing of
go-faster lights.

As soon as I had finished overtaking the car I was level with, I simply
moved over. I'd held-up Messer's Louts by all of 15 seconds and I hadn't
reacted at all to their behaviour. There then followed 3-4 mins of the
most remarkable display of unprovoked intimidation I've ever witnessed on
a road. They all gave me vigorous"v" signs and mouthed obscenities as
they weaved between the lanes in front of me, alternately and for no
reason braking sharply and then speeding up, before finally speeding away
into the distance.

About 5 mins later, the traffic slowed as we passed the site of an
accident on a bend - to see 4 shaken yobs crawling out through the windows
of an very badly bent and overturned Escort. No other car had been
involved - they'd just lost control and had skidded of the road.

I too have to admit to some very uncharitable feelings as I passed by, but
I did resist the temptation to wave!

- Tom.

shaking his head. Said car was at a nice, sharp angle on the verge and
judging from the Unfocussed driver's face I don't think he wanted his car
to be where it was.

Last night we came across a lady driver who had managed to slide her focus
into the verge (a colleage in the car had remarked earlier that her car
seemed totally out of control, wheels spinning and all.

Anyway, said aldy then emergerd from the car and proceeded to try to brush
the snow off her REAR wheels, then got back into the car and tried to pull
away without success.

In the end we took pity and her and gave her a push and managed to get her
back on the road.

Quite frankly Simon, I saw the same thing. Nothing more than a bunch of
tarts who just didn't have a clue.

Well, the media is still on about the big freeze and the chaos it
brought to the country.

One part of the Midlands had people abandoning their cars overnight. It
was interesting watching some of the people picking their cars up in the
morning wheelspinning all over the place when there was no need.

Must be that we have been so snow starved in this country the last few
years that people these days just don't know how to drive a car in such
conditions. Maybe there should be a new law banning people who learnt
to drive after the last 'big freeze' from driving through these
conditions. Gridlock on a road with only a cm of snow is stupid. There
may well be ice, but sensible driving helps!

As there was no bread left in the cupboards of the house today, I went into
town at lunchtime. Took the car. The road between home & town had not been
gritted and was compacted snow/ice with very little tarmac showing. Much of the
road was compacted snow/ice for the entire width of the road. So being a
sensible sort, I took it slowly. At about halfway into the journey there is a
wide verge on the inside (grass then footpath). In my rearview mirror I catch
sight of a black 4x4 range rover type thing getting nearer very quickly. He
*undertook* me by driving straight off the road on to the verge & the footpath
before coming back on to the road. I kid you not.

Indeed, on the way back from town, I came across another idiot behind the wheel
of a car. The roads were a bit better by now, but still far from good. A gold
coloured Ford Unfocussed decided to overtake. At least he overtook rather than
undertook - but, where the centre white line is on the carriageway, it was
covered by about 9" snow/ice. But did this deter our intrepid Ford Unfocussed
driver? Oh no. However, on crossing said depth of snow/ice, the back end of his
Unfocussed steed wobbled. He did not let this deter him as he sped off into the
distance. I came across him further up the road. He was out of his car and
shaking his head. Said car was at a nice, sharp angle on the verge and judging
from the Unfocussed driver's face I don't think he wanted his car to be where
it was.

Laugh? I nearly pee'd myself laughing. Indeed, I looked smugger than His
Smugness the Rev. Blair of Albion, sanctified of Hutton did yesterday ;-)

I would point out, if the bloke had been hurt in any way, I would have stopped
to help, but it was obvious he was okay.

There are some real idiots out there driving and the current road conditions
really catches them out.

Cheers.

Nice one as are the others in this thread - I could always sit and
view these on TV for an hour and have a good laugh at their expense -
seen some myself over the 40 yrs I've been driving, but that's for
another day

cheers John

I live in a valley and to get to my house its up a hill and down another

and
back up a hill.
2 1/4 tons of car, front wheel drive, solid ice road says you will get

stuck
on the hills but 10 psi in the front tyres solves my problem of getting
stuck every time.

Just imagine the traction my citroen ax has, with 10psi in its front tyres.
Bearing in mind its only 720kgs.
Fantastic little run about last year ... great fun driving past people that
were stuck!!!

This year i used the bmw 730i, 1600kgs of dead weight, but behaved itself
in "winter traction" mode.

I wouldn't call a Freelander an off roader. ISTR that they don't have
a diff lock but emulate it using the brakes, opposite of ABS. ie a
wheel starts to spin, it gets braked. If all the wheels start to spin
they all get braked... Probably works provided only one or two wheels
loose traction but on ice you have very little traction available on
all wheels.

As for driving skills on snow/ice. Remember that anyone living down
south (below Manchester ish) and younger than about 30 has probably
never driven on snow before in their life.

Yes.. the old "Series" Land Rovers always seem to have superior off road
ability to their newer cousins... My Series 3 never fails to let me down in
the mud when I go off roading, but ice... that's another thing - 4WD doesn't
seem to help a bit.

It was icy from the start with this spell of snow in Stoke at least.
Walking was difficult. I noticed that a lot of pedestrians were daft
enough to have their hands in their pockets too!

The reason they close the schools when it snows is because the people
who buy those stupid non-off-roadsters are the mums who take their
children to school and extend the rush hour by nearly 2 hours.

Someone obviously realises that these creatures can't drive and if they
could, their vehices are too sad to use.

Salt having no effect in the not all that cold weather, one might ask
what they use in Canadian cities.

But the ad men would have the great unwashed believe it is with all those
adverts showing it as a wild animal running about the African plains ;-)

Cheers.

They probably close the schools because they fear the chaos / danger
that is likely to occur outside the school - namely all those 4x4's,
MPV etc with idiots at the wheel who are better qualified to drive a
pram or a dinky toy. I never go anywhere near a school from ~2.30pm
to ~4.30pm - to dangerous for ME. After the early morning run, these
idiots then headoff to Tesco's or Sainsbury's and more chaos follows .
By 12.30, they have all f**ked off home leaving it fairly clear for me
to do my 20 min whiz around, getting my groceries
..

Yeah, on a track, flat and dry...

My defintion of "off road" means across/up/down a soft wet field where
no other vehicle has been for the last 10 years with a gradient up to
at least 1:6.
