I've processed the 11.14 Terra/MODIS image and cropped it. The file size
is about 750KB so will take about 3-4 minutes on a 56k modem. The lying snow is clear to see as are the odd gaps in the cover. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mtullett/29-jan-2004.jpg Taken from http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/r...11959.250m.jpg That is about 8MB "Image courtesy of MODIS Rapid Response Project at NASA/GSFC". -- Mike 55.13°N 6.69°W Coleraine posted to uk.sci.weather 29/01/2004 19:22:57 UTC |

What seems very strange is the absence of snowfall from the Leeds area down through Sheffield to Nottingham/Derby. I though this area would have got a decent fall considering the fact here in Bolton I got a couple of inches, not a lot compared to some areas but at least a good covering. I've just checked the radar sequence for yesterday (I'd kept it on my hard drive) and part of the front did seem to weaken briefly as it passed over those counties. -- Mike 55.13°N 6.69°W Coleraine posted to uk.sci.weather 29/01/2004 20:05:13 UTC |

Well the western half anyway, see my post below. People were complaining today about the gritters:- http://www.sheffweb.co.uk/ViewArticl...ticleID=731135 - Michael W. Sheffield, UK To give a bit more detail on this, we experienced quite a bit of snow on the *west* side of Sheffield, about 3-4 inches on the car by 5.00pm. Easily enough to cause absolute gridlock at Wednesday rush hour. Strange pattern though - I flew in a light aircraft from Sheffield airport today and there was a marked dividing line running down the centre of Sheffield, the clear area extending well east of Retford, and the eastern snow-cover was clearly visible a few miles away as per the satellite image. I wonder what caused this snow-less area? |

Just in case, here is the URL again, but I think the site is currently down, as I cannot access it tonight. http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/r...11959.250m.jpg That was a copy/paste job, as I don't trust my typing:-) -- Mike 55.13°N 6.69°W Coleraine posted to uk.sci.weather 30/01/2004 19:42:58 UTC Temp 4.1C Pressure 989mb falling |
