As has already been noted, last week was a very harsh one for most Aegean
isles, with F14 winds, blizzards and two islands and eastern Crete (up to 130 cm of snow in inhabited areas of Lasithi) declaring a state of emergency. Here are some photographs from the island of Andros (central Aegean): vessels are pushed off the sea: http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/100-0072_IMG.JPG http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/100-0073_IMG.JPG http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/100-0077_IMG.JPG once upon a time, there was a nice little port... http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/100-0089_IMG.JPG http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/101-0102_IMG.JPG (panoramic 1) http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/101-0103_IMG.JPG (panoramic 2) and, close to it, a nice little tree... http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/101-0116_IMG.JPG ducks, seeking food and warmth: http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/100-0031_IMG.JPG http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/101-0129_IMG.JPG more snow: http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/101-0126_IMG.JPG http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/100-0014_IMG.JPG and Wijke's beloved white houses ( ![]() http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/100-0058_IMG.JPG A textbook warm front brought much milder air masses from the southwest and heavy snowfalls turned to rain in the low lying areas of northern Greece by Tuesday afternoon. Thursday brought some very nasty downpours of rain over much of continental Greece again (max rainfall intensity 197.6 mm/h in SE Athens), while the low that brought that snow to NW Europe should affect us tomorrow with heavy rainfalls turning to snowfalls over much of continental regions. The following week could bring some belated halcyon days. Yannis, SE Athens clear 190.4 mm in January so far :-) http://www.e-kairos.gr/january04.html |

Hardly can imagine such violence. Once sailed the North Sea with wave-heights up till 7 metre. Was happy to reach land again - however entering a harbour, in these circumstances, is the most tricky part of the tour! and Wijke's beloved white houses ( ![]() http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/100-0058_IMG.JPG mmmmm, yes -- but where's the sunny island, the deep blue sky, the azuri sea ;-pp? Our neighbours found themselves in very hard conditions, too. Istanbul paralysed after some very heavy snowfalls, while many areas received simply too much snow. It is snowing again throughout the northwest of Greece. It has become a bit brighter in Athens after noon's thunderstorms, but, as soon as the low that affected NW Europe during the last days meets the Aegean, winds should veer north here, too, and the HNMS are forecasting snow for the greek capital tomorrow -i only see sleet but here's hope:-) Yannis, SE Athens +9.9C, RH 69% |

Yannis.
Was Elounda in Crete badly affected with snow last week, as we were on holiday there last October. Best regards. Len. "Yannis" wrote in message ...
