Default Today's model interpretation (30/01/04)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Tuesday. Issued
0655z, 30/01/04.

ECMWF: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Recm1201.html
High pressure lies over the western Mediterranean, with low pressure to the
north of Scotland. This leads to strong SW'lies for all, with little change
at T+144. By then, the winds are lighter southerlies for Scotland and by
T+168 the UK lies under lighter WSW'lies and SW'lies, with low pressure to
the south of Iceland.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html
The Met Office run shows lows over and to the SW of Iceland, with SW'lies
for all. The SW'lies continue for all at T+144, as the low to the SW of
Iceland moves quickly NE'wards.

GFS: http://64.246.48.81/pics/Rtavn1081.gif
Strong to gale force SW'lies cover the UK, with a deep low to the south of
Iceland. The SW'lies continue at T+120, as a secondary low deepens to the
west of Ireland. 850hPa temperatures range from -1C over northern Scotland
to +6C over Cornwall. The winds become westerlies at T+144 as pressure rises
to the SW, followed by southerlies and SSW'lies as the buildiing ridge moves
switfly ENE'wards over Germany. A secondary low covers the UK on day 8, with
light winds for most. Day 9 sees the low move NE'wards and deepen, with
northerlies and NW'lies for the UK. The NW'lies become lighter for most on
day 10 as a weak ridge moves over the UK.

GEM: http://www.meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120.html
The Canadian run shows a large high over Iberia, France and the western
Mediterranean and a low to the north of Scotland. Winds are strong SW'lies
for all, with 850hPa temperatures ranging from +3C over northern Scotland to
+9C over southern England. The SW'lies continue at T+144, with high pressure
persisting to the SSE.

JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html
Strong SSW'lies are affecting the UK, with complex low pressure to the south
of Iceland. 850hPa temperatures vary from +1C over NW Scotland to +8C over
East Anglia. The winds become WSW'lies at T+144 as the lows merge and move
slowly eastwards. The WSW'lies persist at T+168, but by day 8 they become
strong westerlies and WNW'lies, due to a weak ridge over the Irish Sea.

In summary, the runs continue to show an unsettled spell for all, with
strong to gale force SW'lies midweek. Beyond that, things look like staying
mobile, with the Azores High ridging northwards to bring cooler westerlies
or WNW'lies after a while. As ever, more runs are needed.
