Default Today's model interpretation (31/01/04)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Wednesday. Issued
0704z, 31/01/04.

ECMWF: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Recm1201.html
High pressure covers the western Mediterranean, with low pressure to the SW
of Iceland. Winds are strong SW'lies for all, although by T+144 they become
WSW'lies as the Icelandic low fills slowly. T+168 sees SE'lies again, with a
trough to the west of the UK.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html
The Met Office run shows a secondary low to the NW leading to WSW'lies. The
winds become SW'lies at T+144, as the low fills over the Faroes.

GFS: http://64.246.48.81/pics/Rtavn1081.gif
A secondary low lies to the north of Scotland, with WSW'lies for all. The
WSW'lies continue at T+120, with 850hPa temperatures varying from -3C over
northern Scotland to +2C over southern England. The winds remain WSW'lies at
T+144, but by T+168 they strengthen from the WNW as a weak ridge moves over
Ireland. WSW'lies return on day 8, with low pressure south and east of
Iceland. Day 9 sees westerlies as a trough crosses the UK, followed by (yet
more) WSW'lies on day 10.

GEM: http://www.meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120.html
The Canadian run shows WSW'lies associated with lows to the south of
Iceland. 850hPa temperatures vary from +1C over NW Scotland to +8C over SE
England. The WSW'lies continue at T+144, as the main Icelandic low moves
eastwards.

JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html
Complex low pressure surrounds Iceland, leading to SW'lies for all. 850hPa
temperatures range from +3C over NW Scotland to +9C over SE England. The
winds become WSW'lies at T+144, with low pressure close to the NW of
Scotland. The low fills over Shetland at T+168, bringing WNW'lies and
westerlies, followed by NNW'lies on day 8 as a ridge builds to the west.

In summary, the runs show an unsettled and windy spell of weather for
midweek, with temperatures on the mild side due to the WSW'ly or SW'ly
winds.
