Default British Isles Outlook - 11th to 20th February 2004

The general PRESSURE situation for the period 11th to 20th February
2004 has the usual LP to the NW and W of the country. A slight
difference from previous forecasts is the centre of HP which was
placed over Germany and further E, but is now over W Germany, France,
SW Norway, SE England and Biscay. The general picture is one of mild
conditions.

WINDS over the period are generally light in the E and SE of the
country, but come from a SW direction in the W and NW of the country.
Dryer conditions can be expected in the E and SE parts of Britain, but
wetter conditions will be found in the W and NW.

London's TEMPERATURE trend is generally unsettled at first, but
still slightly above average in the SW winds. After 16th February the
temperature falls generally to 18th and then shows a steady climb to
the end of the period. Small cold dips in the curve are expected near
13th, 15th and 18th. Small warm peaks are expected near 11th 14th and
15th. Ground minimum temperatures are expected to be low on 11th to
13th and 17th to 20th. The lowest ground minimum temperature of the
period is expected on 20th.

Glasgow's TEMPERATURE trend shows a steady fall to the end of the
period. Cold dips expected near 13th, 16th and 19th. Warm peaks
expected near 14th, 17th and 20th.

STRONG WIND days a- On 11th - N Scotland and W and SW England ( on
SE side of the Iceland LP). On 13th - W Scotland and SW England.
(front side of secondary). On 14th - NW and W Scotland. (LP
approaches Scotland). On 16th - off SW British Isles. (advancing
trough coming into SW). On 17th - SW of British Isles and S
Ireland. ( advancing secondary LP). On 18th - in Channel.
(stationary secondary LP over S England). On 19th - around
Scotland. (LP near N Scotland). On 20th - W coast of Scotland and
Ireland. (large Atlantic LP comes in behind HP ridge).

The general RUN OF WEATHER over the period, starts with HP over E and
SE districts moving into the near continent- At the same time, LP
near Iceland and its associated secondary LP move towards the British
Isles on 13th February. On 14th, with HP over the near continent,
the secondary LP swings across the country moving then NNE towards SW
Norway. On 15 and 16th, not very much happens apart from HP building
up over the continent. The parent LP stays near S Iceland and a
belt of HP touches France . Germany and Russia. However, on 17th, a
secondary LP on the S flank of the Iceland LP, moves into SW
Britain. From the 18th to the end of the period, the secondary
becomes stationary round about S England, but is replenished by
disturbances coming up from W France. Also, a HP ridge (N to S)
which has already formed out in the Atlantic on 16th and 17th, is
moving E'wards towards Britain and is expected to lie from Greenland
to W of Iceland, to NW and N Scotland, to W Ireland, to W Biscay and
then to the Azores by 19th and 20th, bringing a cooler period to the
British Isles.

On 11th February, LP to the NW of the British Isles moves E'wards.
Fronts from the LP enter N Ireland and SW England. HP ridge through
Biscay to France and S North Sea drifts into the near continent. Winds
light in the SE turn SW from the W of the country.

On 12th February, LP lies to the N and NW of Scotland with a small
trough to the SW of Norway. On the SW flank of the Iceland HP, a
secondary LP is moving E'wards towards Ireland. Azores HP stretches ENE
towards S France and the near continent. Winds will be W or SW over
the country.

On 13th February, an area of LP stretches from N Ireland up to S of
Iceland and NW Scandinavia A small secondary LP associated with the
complex LP area is expected near the Irish Sea. HP covers E Germany, N
Italy and the Balkans.Winds will be SW turning to W later.

On 14th February, LP lies to the NW of Scotland with a trough to a
small secondary LP which lies near the Irish Sea, moving NE'wards
towards SW Norway. Winds are SW at first turning W later.

On 15th February, LP lies near W Scotland with a trough towards SW
Norway. HP stretches from the Azores HP through Biscay towards an
area of HP over France and Germany and this extends E'wards. Winds
are W to SW over the country.

On 16th February, a LP area lies to the N of Scotland and a belt of HP
stretches from Biscay into Germany and Poland.Winds will be W at first,
but cooler W to NW winds begin to spread into W'ern areas later.

On 17th February, a complex belt of LP stretches from near Iceland to
Scotland and a LP area lies over central Scandinavia. A small
secondary LP is moving E'wards towards Ireland and Wales. Winds will be
light from a N'erly direction at first, but turn S in the W later as
the secondary arrives.

On 18th February, LP lies down the E and NE coast of Britain moving
into the North Sea. . A small ridge of HP (lying N to S) just to the W
of Ireland is coming into W'tern districts. An improvement takes place
as cooler NW winds flow into the country.

On 19th February, a small LP area to the NE of Scotland moves away
E'wards. The Azores HP reaches as far as SW Ireland with a bridge
across England to an area of HP over the near continent. A small LP
could lie over W France with little movement towards the NE. Winds are
mostly light and variable, possibly NE in the S of the country and N
winds in the N of the country.

On 20th February, an area of LP lies to the SW and W of Norway. A
small secondary lies near NW Germany with and extension trailing into
the Channel. Another weak secondary could be somewhere near W
Scotland. The Azores HP comes into the W of the British Isles and
develops further N'wards to an area of HP near S Iceland. Winds will
be light and variable.
