Default Today's model interpretation (26/07/03)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output, for noon (GMT) on Wednesday.
Issued 0554z, 26/07/03.

ECMWF: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Recm1201.html
A trough lies to the west of Scotland, with a secondary low over SE
Scotland. To the south, winds are moderate westerlies and WSW'lies. The
parent low deepens and moves NE'wards to the south of Iceland at T+144, with
moderate SW'lies for all. The SW'lies continue at T+168, as the low spawns a
second centre to the west of Scotland.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html

GFS:

The UK lies under moderate westerlies, although the winds are lighter over
southern England due to a nearby ridge. The ridge covers southern England at
T+120, with SW'lies further north. Low pressure lies to the SSW of Iceland,
while 850hPa temperatures range from +3C over northern Scotland to +9C over
Cornwall. The low splits in two and moves eastwards at T+144, with
westerlies for all. WSW'lies cover the UK at T+168 as the lows merge to the
NW of the UK. By day 8, the low fills to the west of Norway, with westerlies
over the UK. The westerlies are light over much of England due to a ridge
over Biscay. The ridge moves northwards on day 9, bringing lighter
westerlies to most areas. By day 10, NW'lies cover the UK, with a ridge over
the Celtic Sea.

The Canadian run shows a secondary low to the east of Scotland, with SW'lies
and SSW'lies for most. There are two lows to the west and WNW of the UK; by
T+144 they merge and extend a trough to the west of Scotland. This leads to
moderate SE'lies over Scotland and slightly stronger westerlies elsewhere.
The trough moves to the north at T+168, allowing moderate westerlies to
affect the UK. A ridge over the UK brings SSW'lies and SW'lies on day 8,
followed by westerlies on day 9 as a trough crosses Scotland. The trough
moves northwards on day 10, with westerlies for all.

JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html
A ridge covers the UK, with light and variable winds for most. The exception
is NE Scotland, which lies under NW'lies from a low west of Norway. 850hPa
temperatures range from +4C over northern Scotland to +11C over southern
England.

MM5: http://rain.mmm.ucar.edu/mm5/plots/n...6hrn.hr120.gif
The Mesoscale run shows SW'ly gales over the UK, with low pressure to the
west of Scotland.

In summary, the runs are mixed today, although all show ridging over Biscay
which would bring slight more settled conditions to southern England. As to
where the lows will be, detail varies a fair bit, from over the UK (ECM), to
the north (GFS), to the west (Canadian). As ever, more runs are needed.
